We have just returned from a trip to Sicily, one of the highlights of which was a trip to Mount Etna orchestrated and guided by Davide from Continente Sicilia. We were a group of 9 - 4 adults and 5 children - ages ranging from 8 to 15 yrs. The whole experience was fantastic. We were staying in Syracuse and Davide's instructions on where to meet were clear. We met him just north of Catania and followed him in our hire cars. He was a considerate driver, waiting to ensure we had seen his car and were able to follow him. He was great with the children and very informative and interesting about the volcano itself. Paying extra for the cable car was well worth it. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
For Etna itself I would recommend a warm jumper. It seems impossible that - at 35 degrees at the coast - it could be cold, but it is. You can hire a jacket at the cable car station for around 2 euros but you may prefer to take your own. Trainer style shoes or walking shoes also strongly recommended.
