We have just returned from a super five day holiday with our two small children staying at the Villa Ducale. We found it on the web (but not through this website, which we did not then know about) and thought it looked wonderful. And so it turned out to be.
If you want to stay in Taormina, given that it is decidedly hilly, you need to decide whether you want to be (a) at the beach, (b) in the town or (c) above the town. Villa Ducale is definitely (c) and, as a result, has breathtaking views from the main terrace over the sea to Mount Etna and the town. It is also a ten minute (the less easy, but nearer steps) or fifteen to twenty minute (the much nicer, Madonna della Rocca steps) walk down to the main street. We enjoyed this; our six year old had no problems with the walk and we had a backpack for our two year old. A buggy would have been impossible. We also had no problems with the (not that numerous) steps at the hotel - the two year old walked up and down them without difficulty or complaint.
We made full use of the hotel shuttle and the bus to return to the hotel. You need to plan ahead to get your timing right, but we never found this inconvenient.
Our suite was on the opposite side of the road from the reception areas. It was nicely decorated and, although not huge, there was plenty of room for the four of us. The children slept in the living room bit - on a sofa bed and in a travel cot respectively. The room had beautiful views over the sea and to the mainland (i.e. totally different from the reception areas - an unexpected bonus). The loo was separate from the bathroom, which I like and the room was quiet (no traffic or other noise to speak of).
We made full use of the jacuzzi and much enjoyed our breakfasts - the savoury elements were particularly interesting and varied and Sicilian orange juice is the gold standard which other orange juices just don't meet.
The owners and staff were charming and unfailingly friendly and helpful, particularly to the children. We liked and ate well in the restaurants they recommended (which were all family friendly) and also ate well at the hotel one evening when we returned late from a day trip to Siracusa. The hotel food, available for room service, is simple but good.
If you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel, the Villa Ducale may not be for you. The outside areas are limited (this may be true of many other hotels in Taormina because of the steep slopes on which they sit) and those away from the reception mainly seem to lose the sun quite early in the day. Also, there is no swimming pool. None of these things made any difference to us, we still had a brilliant time and would still go back.
