“Lovely Hotel Close to Attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

Beautiful hotel in Taormina if you can find it! Our GPS got us close by, but we were right next to it when it said to go around the block. If you drive there, the hotel suggested you put the police station in the GPS and it will easily get you to the property. We were so delighted to walk into the lovely lobby area and be greeted so warmly by the Reception Desk personnel. Once there, it was like an oasis. Close to everything, but far enough away to be peaceful and quiet. It use to be a Domenican Monestary and they have many relics lying around the beautiful garden retreat areas and hallways.

The room was lovely but I have to truly give the Reception Staff a great big thank you! I left my new mini IPad on the airplane in Rome before flying to Sicily. Right before we got to Taormina, I got an email back from Alitalia that they had indeed found my IPad. I researched online to find a courier to pick up my IPad at the Rome Airport and ship it to our last stop in Amalfi. I needed copies several items plus a letter authorizing the courier service to pick it up. The hotel accomodated me by making copies and scanning them for me to send to both the courier service as well as Alitalia. Of course, nothing was easy, so the hotel had to resend it to them directly as it was probably too large a file to forward on my phone. They did it and were so gracious about helping me - and they were very busy all the time, so it wasn't as if they had nothing else to do. I was so very grateful to them and want to give a shout out to Katerina (I think) and another woman at the desk! They made my vacation so much more enjoyable knowing I didn't have to run around looking for a place where I could do all the paperwork. Plus, such a great hotel in all respects.

This hotel is an oasis in the otherwise quite touristic Taormina. The hotel premises are gorgeous. We had a superior hotel room with sea view and if I pushed the curtain aside far enough and leaned out the window I could indeed see the sea, Etna and the beautiful hotel gardens, however, I could not really see much of that from inside the room. There are some rooms with balconies, which might have a better view. I thought the price was a little steep for that kind or room, though the room was very clean and comfortable. I think one should consider spending less on the room (just get a normal room and spend $100.- less) and just enjoy the spectacular views from the garden or swimming pool.
Breakfast is served on a terrace with more extraordinary views and the breakfast buffet is amazing. The most wonderful thing about this hotel is to just wander around and soak up the atmosphere. We really enjoyed it and would come here again any time.

Stayed here just after Easter, it was fantastic to get some sun. Bit difficult to find by car as when we arrived it was dark and the main road to the hotel was closed. The roads are very narrow with a one way system so luckily we had the Ipad to revert to find the hotel. Really good service at reception, booked a suite with a small patio for husband, myself and Teenager room was plenty big enough with a view of the sea. Restaurants were good although food quality (and service) dipped slightly at our last meal as all 3 of us were disappointed with the food. That said the rest of the stay the food was great and breakfast was very good. The Michelin star restaurant was excellent as was the service here. The hotel is in a fantastic location, easy access to town and the gardens were beautiful full of fruit and flowers and you don't really here the noise from the road that runs around the hotel. The pool was very nice, not that small as you can easily do lengths in it as it not a 'silly' shape and it was clean. It also has a small gym, enough to keep you ticking over. In my experience many historic Italian hotels don't cater for gym bunnies so even a small gym was a bonus! The hotel itself is a converted monastery, an old building so as old building go it is maintained very well. You don't really notice the odd peeling paintwork — it adds to the charm of the place however, if you are after supercool, modern all service hotel with a state of the art gym then this is not for you. If you want good service, more than reasonable food in a fantastic location where you can relax unbothered by people and are happy with the fact that the building is old then it is great. At the end of the holiday the husband stated he would definitely come back as he thought that the hotel was one of the nicest we have stayed in. High praise!

Room Tip: Book a Sea view it is worth it. Used a single room to store baggage in before we left the single roo...

The hotel itself is great, large courtyards, long hall ways, incredible view from the terrace, pleasant swimming pool area and is located conveniently off the main road. The rooms are clean, nice and have a slightly older feel about them (which suits the look of the place). The only downside was the noise around our room. We were next door to one of the cleaners rooms and there seemed to be racket every so often throughout the night which made it difficult to get a decent nights sleep. There also seemed to be people collecting bottles most morning in the street outside our window. Would recommend that you ensure you get a room away from the cleaners rooms.

We had a wonderful stay at the San Domenico Palace this year - first time back to Taormina since 1988. The room was wonderful iwth a view across the bay that must be one of the best in the world, and although I sympathise with the visitors who found the peeling paint and dusty corridors at odds with a five star hotel, we found it charming and far better than the Disneyfied refurbishments of other grand hotels we've stayed at.
Breakfast was fabulous with the great views and perfect staff, and our meal in the posh restaurant was, in the late Michael Winner's terms, historic - va brilliant vegetarian menu put together specially for us and the best sommelier I've ever met

However, management is rather sloppy - i didn't appreciate seeing the full guest list with room numbers and amounts paid left idly by the pool, and for EUR300 a night I woulf like to be known as a person rather than a room number. And the services have the bitter taste of the 90s about htem, when hotels could make a good turn on the extras - 35EUR a day for internet usage is riduculous when a 2 EUR coffee round the corner gets you free wireless, and the minibar prices just encourage you to die of thirst - or buy beer and water from ove the road and stuff it in the fridge. The guests are not all on corporate expenses or Liz Taylor, and the management should recognise this.

Room Tip: Pay extra and get a sea view with a balcony. Waking up to the sunrise will be magical

Booked a 'superior' room with sea view in the 'newer' section. Wonderful view of taurmina town from the balcony. Lovely gardens and although the pool is small, it's agood shape and deepl enough to swim lengths. surprisingly quiet since a road runs round the edge of the hotel. Very good service. Very easy access to town and restaurants. 15-20 mins walk to get to bus station and cable car for trips and beach access. Public beach small so if staying by beach, not a lot of public access or walking areas since main road is VERY busy.

Room Tip: sea view with balcony ,second floor - balconies not overlooked. Higher floors have open terrace and...

This was our second stay. The hotel is breathtakingly beautiful. You could spend hours exploring the hotel and the grounds with both steeped in history. If you are looking for a standard, boring hotel this is not for you. It is perfectly located at the quiet end of Taormina. The rooms, the staff, the food are all fabulous. Can't wait for our next visit.

Room Tip: All rooms are great but choose the most you can afford, it will be worth it
