“Delightful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Relaxing atmosphere with breath taking views. Lovely rooms and a tranquil air. Wonderful location to walk into Taormina for great restaurants. Staff are charming and our every request was met promptly. The garden and cloisters are a delight full of lemon and orange trees, bougainvillaea and scented jasmine. Just lovely.

Some people say, that General Patton wanted at fiirst to reconquer Sicaly and Taormina for sure, because he wanted to occupie the "San Domenico" for his european headquarter in the second world war.
I will believe in this story, because the San Domenico is the best place in Europe to stay.
The Hotel is a 500 year old monastery and it iis laying at the "Balcony of Sicaly". If you are standing at your window of your room, you will have a bright view over the ocean. It is beautifull.
when you take a walk through the garden and through the colonades of the monaster, you can feel and drink in the athmosphere of the times, when the monks walked in.
If you don't have a sence for this expressions, you better should take a Hilton or HolydayInn or whatever.
the furniture and the paintings are as same as old as the monastery. They are also beautifull.

At least, what can I say to you?

I paid 350 $ for a doubleroom and if they would have given me an airmattress in a stowage, I would have been lucky, to stay in this great place.
but they gave me a wonderfull room, an extraordinary breakfast at the terrace and a full satisfying service.

Come and see the "Pearl of Mediterrane"

This is one of the most elegant hotels I have stayed in with high ceilings, beautiful corridors filled with amazing art, wonderful courtyard, great service.

We stayed with our family in deluxe sea-facing rooms. We had large, beautiful rooms with amazing views and nice balconies

Location is just down the steps from the main street of Taormina so reasonably quiet. There is a train line at the bottom of the cliff but the trains are quite infrequent

The restaurant was a bit too formal for me and the food quite average, so you are better off in any of the dozens of nice restaurants off the main street. We had a good meal at a restaurant called Granduca

The breakfast was what you would expect from what is regularly described as one of the best hotels in Europe

Most people choose between this and Grand Hotel Timeo - Timeo seemed very nice as well and the location is just off of Teatro Greco, but that makes it a bit off the main street. San Domenico is also much better value.

I stayed here in November, lovely place - very unlike a standard hotel. The place itself is like a museum or gallery - and the staff were very professional and attentive. The location is excellent in Taormina, with lovely views over the bay. I wouldn't like to drive in Taormina, and the roads, lanes and parking seemed tricky to navigate.
This hotel isn't a standard hotel, and some of the things you might expect now of a hotel of this type were not there. For example, the bathroom was not the usual pristine white and could do with being updated. The water and water pressure were again not as you would expect. The windows were 'vintage'. However when you see where the hotel is built and that the building is hundreds of years old, the good points outweigh everything else, and it's probably a good thing that there are still some hotels in the world some aspects are a bit different.

My husband and I stayed one night at the San Domenico Palace in November 2012 and we thought it was magnificent. The room was large and utterly comfortable, breakfast was included, and they gave us a free upgrade to one with a balcony over the ocean, even though we were paying with United Airlines miles instead of cash. The hotel was once an Abbey and has been combined with other houses of the period to make a lovely, rambling place filled with beautiful art, centered around a courtyard. It was reminiscent of the Danieli in Venice--a real treasure--and I would go back in a heartbeat. Next time I'm staying more than one night!

Room Tip: Spring for an ocean view room with a balcony--the view is spectacular and well worth it since the ba...

This exquisite hotel has not changed in all the years I have known and loved it. Wander in its gardens and go back in time, a time when Taormina was the destination for winter visitors, poets, writers and the aristocracy. I remember another time, more recently, when the 'grande maestro' Chico Schimone touched the keys of the piano in the bar lounge and produced magical moments. But the beauty of the San Domenico endures and captivates the modern traveller as it has done for so many years. For me it is quintiessentially Taormina and I think about it with nostalgia and affection.

Room Tip: This is an ex monastery although comfortable and well appointed, the rooms remains the rooms of anot...

The San Domenico hotel is a unique, and a fantastic place to stay while you are visiting Sicily,
Taormina is a small village and the hotel is right on the center of the village.
This is an old monastery, transformed into a real palace hotel, Containing memorabilia from the past, wonderful gardens, fine dining, stunning views of the bay seen from the room window .
In short a perfect recipe for a romantic and special holiday.
Pleasant service, delicious breakfast, stunning views from the restaurant, and all around you a Amazing colors of bougainvillea.
