“Exellent impressions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2011

My husband and I stayed in the hotel “Calipso” in July. The hotel is very comfy. Great location: there is a bus stop (bus going to Taormina) close by, a railway station and a convenient exit to the highway. The hotel is situated close to the sea. Everything was great including breakfast, big bed in the room, AC, pool, free WI-FI, fridge with mini-bar in the room etc. The staff was helpful and very attentive. The hotel has a free parking which was very convenient for us because we came there by car.
We had a room on the ground floor. It had it's own terrace with a round table and 2 chairs.

Small and tidy hotel in Mazzeo, a 5-minute drive away from the funicular's base that can take you up to the heart of Taormina. My husband and I hired a car to travel around Sicily and we could park our car at the hotel's basement garage free of charge. If you haven't got a car, there is a bit of a distance to walk to the bus stop and funiclar's base.

Nice beach located in front of the hotel. The staff was very friendly and provided us with useful transport and dining information. The restaurant recommended by the hotel, a couple of blocks down the road, serves fresh, delicious Sicilian cuisine.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights while we visited Taormina. It's down near the ocean, not on the beach, but across and Taormina is way up top on the cliffs. It's a little confusing to get to, there's some really narrow one way streets.

The hotel is ok, we had some frustrations staying here. You have to ask to be let into the parking area below and it's very small, sometimes there are no spots. When you drive out to leave it's impossible to open the metal gate yourself and there is no intercom. I have no idea how they expect guests to get out. I had to jump out of the car and run and ask the front desk to open it, and then run back to the car to tell my husband to back up so that the gates didn't smash into the front of the car because they open inwards. The receptionist was ALWAYS on the phone and did not seem to pay attention.

When we came back after a day tour it had rained a bit and we walked into our room to find the entire floor covered in a pool of water, the blankets and the drapes were soaked at the bottom. Going to the front desk was no help, the receptionist handed my husband some pool towels and said the maids had left. WHAT kind of service is that? We have to clean up our own flooded room and there is no mop to be found?

This was the summer and the restaurant on site was never open, always closed. We had asked for some fruit for breakfast as we're vegan and there was none provided at all, so we had to skip it.

I only ever saw 1 girl at the hotel, there was no other staff anywhere so I didn't feel particularly taken care of or safe with one person who's always on the phone running the show.

Our stay was ok here, but we're definitely put off by the lack of concern for guests here.

Also there is a sign on the front door saying it is forbidden to bring food onto the property. What is that supposed to mean? You can't even go to the store to get some snacks?

Dear Guest,
I’m really sorry about your disappointments about Hotel Calipso service and staff.
I would like to say you that Hotel Calipso is a small hotel, so the parking area is for 14 cars as much as the rooms are. There is no interfone, but the receptionist have cameras from which they can see all the movements and open the gate. The receptionist dutie involves phone but the reception staff pay attention for all guest needs, even if they are working on the telephone.
In order to the water into your room, i’m very sorry about that incovenience, but if you consider that Hotel Calipso is a 3 star hotel you can image that the maid room service is covered just for half day, so i think that the receptionist helped you as well as he can.
Concernig the restaurant, i can assure you that all restaurant, our partner and not, are open. Mazzeo is a seasonal site and ALL restaurants are always open, for lunch and dinner time (local abits hours). We are improving the breakfast service with fresh fruits, but our buffet offer a lot of vegetarian food, such as juice, jam, cereals, bread, croissant and so on.
Concerning the staff, i repeat that Hotel Calipso is a small hotel, but despite this the front office team is made of 4 people covering 24 hour service.
Last bust not least, the sign on the front door saying that the guest cannot bring food inside the rooms, because our hotel offer a bar and a mini bar service, where the guest can get a lot of drinks, snacks, ice creams, salads and so on.
I underline again that our hotel differs just on the service, and both I and other guest can assure that the service is customized and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Best Regards

The good thinks: The staff was very helpful and friendly. It's in Mazzeo direct on the beach. We could park the car in the garage. We had free Internet access.
What we didn't like: The bathroom was very small. The breakfast was not great. 4 or 5 garbage dumpsters are just in front of the hotel; not a nice view and lots of noise, when the people fill the dumpsters with their waste.
We are not sure, if we would recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest,
your review is precious!
I know the dumpsters are noisy and antiaesthetic, in fact I have pressed several times the public administration, but i didn't receive any answer and unfortunately I cannot move them as own initiative.
In order to breakfast service next season will be different, and I hope you will be again our guest so you can test the quality of service.

This hotel was pretty cheap when we stayed there. The location is great. The room was nicely fitted out if very quite small and you couldn't swing a kitten in the bathroom not to mind a cat. My main problem was the bed was dreadful. There was no support under the mattress so it sagged terribly in the centre. The staff were friendly and helpful etc but I should probably have complained about the bed...

Our stay at the Calypso Hotel was just brilliant. The hotel is so claen and bright and tidy, it was a pleasure to be there. The staff were the most friendly and helpful you could hope to find. They helped us organize our trip on a traghetto to Salerno and were just generally happy and helpful. We found staying in Mazzeo was ideal as the beach was just across the road and Taormina a short bus or taxi drive away. We had a wonderful time and reccomend it to anyone.
