Apartment and area
We stayed in the top floor apartment which overlooks the large bay and beyond to Italy. It certainly lives up to its name. The view is incredible and possibly the best we have ever had. We became addicted to this view and sat on the balcony for hours, watching the sociable locals go about their daily lives. Or the tourists promenading in the early evening before going to one of the numerous restaurants along the bay. Even a wedding party drove up and down one time, beeping their horns and folk came out and kissed the bride and shook the groom's hand. It seems such a happy, outside, sociable way of life.
The apartment is clean, cheerfully decorated and furnished and has all a couple needs, including a washing machine that should have meant we didn't need to bring so many clothes. The television seemed surplus to our requirements. The very small kitchen has everything, but it is basic.
We spent most late afternoons on the large, beautiful, mostly shingly beach, just across the road. In awe of the local children playing football etc on it bare footed. The children have a wonderful time and we saw different families and nationalities playing together. On every beach we sat on, including "ours", you are frequently offered foot or back massagios from Thai ladies who can be quite persistent. Africans quietly walk the beach carrying a small shop worth of beach goodies, ie sunglasses, hats and jewellery, That happens on all beaches and perhaps can be avoided by hiring a sunbed in a lido. A couple of occasions, there were jellyfish ('medusas') so we did not swim in the quite cool sea those times. I understand most Med resorts have jellyfish days. There is a Sports Club swimming pool with sun loungers, etc, a drive along the main road you can go to.
The restaurants tend to all offer the same menu; we preferred to visit popular waterfront ones. Service can often be slow so relax and enjoy the ambiance. Food is reasonably priced, and the house wines perfectly drinkable and cheap. When we self-catered we found the supermarket very reasonable and worth stocking up from (Fufu will explain where that is)..
Friendly Pinucchio was usually downstairs in the ground floor café and always gave a cheery wave and buongiorno. We were without mains water for an hour one time, when, with broken English, he was able to reassure us that it would be sorted soon. Hard working Fufu is very professional and takes care of the business side of things. Fufu, whose English is very good, advised us to catch one of the regular buses for 1 euro to local Taormina. (The bus stop just yards away from the apartment)
Taormina is a fabulous hilltop village with an ancient Greek Theatre (apparently Mark Knoffler will be playing there in mid-July as part of their music festival) and a lovely park. The view from the theatre, including the coast and Mount Etna, is used for tourist promotions as it is such a stunning location.. We visited Taromina for the day - twice. We caught a further bus for another euro up to the very top, to a castle and village. The castle is being renovated and due to be finished Nov 2013. Incredible views and awesome constructions so high up..
We also visited Mount Etna by car. An essential visit but you need good shoes if you want to climb up one of the steep, dead crators. We considered going on the circular train ride but it is for 5 hours, and we didn't find the time.
We also visited Ortyggia Island in Siracusa. Over an hour's drive down the autostrada but it is well sign-posted and worth setting aside a whole long day as lots to visit,
Sicily has much to offer, especially if you like stunning views, old towns, photography or history. We think we would like to visit again but in May or September, as it was too hot around mid-day for visiting archaeological sites. So we just soaked up the atmosphere and sun and had a great time.

We have been really pleased in having you with us and you made our job so easy while here as you already were aware of all that you could experience in the East of the Sicily, books and magazines we guess...
Thank you for complimenting us for our hospitality and way of carrying on our business, it's quite hard to handle all our tasks but we do our best to make feel all our guests home and solve all the problems, day and night as we are always on hand.
We really hope that one day you'll come back to Taormina...maybe in the meanwhile you can keep thinking about the gorgeous view from the balcony!
