“Good hotel - functional and served the purpose”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

We only stayed in Siracusa for one night and picked this hotel based on previous reviews on this website.

The hotel is in an ok location, it is about a 15 minute walk from Ortegia island and the restaurants and shops of Syracusa. However, like most of Sicily, you are never sure how safe a walk it actually is, that said, we had no problems. Taxis are plentiful and a taxi to and from Ortegia main square will cost approx €10.

The hotel is not glamorous or luxurious but it is clean, modern and bright. Our room was large, newly decorated and was spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable and there were lots of toiletries and extra pillows. The overall decor of the hotel, while newly done, is slightly cheap with cheap plastic bathrooms and a lot of orange and brown in the bedrooms.

We did not eat in the hotel so cannot comment on this but we did look at the breakfast buffet and it was adequate.

The pool area is cramped, there are only about 10 sunbeds in a cramped row on the roof next to a small but clean and modern pool.

We found the staff to have excellent english (best we experience in Sicily) and they were extremely knowledgeable about the area and helpful with their recommendations.

I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

The main advantage of this hotel if you have a car is the secure underground car park and easy access from the main road - two very rare things in a small town in Italy!

This place has all mod cons and I loved it. Especially the mirror that doubled as a TV screen. We got upgraded to a business room with tea coffee and bathrobes which meant I could buy croissants from the bakers and enjoy breakfast in the room overlooking the archeological site. There is a small pool on the roof.
Parking outside is free but it fills early. They let us park in the underground park for free but exiting the parking lot the following morning took twenty minutes as the route was blocked by treble parked resident parking.
You can walk down into Ortegia in fifteen minutes.

Room Tip: Higher the better to keep away from street noise

This should be your choice of hotel, especially if you are attending a play at the teatro greco. Close to fantastic archeological park and the stupendous museum, also about twenty minutes walk to ortygia, the old city. Hotel has friendly and helpful staff who speak multiple languages, rooms are comfortable, breakfast is fanstastic and plentiful and varied, especially the fresh fruit!

We were visiting the Archeological sites in Siracusa. This hotel is within walking distance of them all. Parking is free if outside but still gated. Staff was very helpful guiding us to each of the sits.

Room Tip: Stay on the north side because of the hot afternoon sun.

The hotel is very clean and modern, easy to get to if you rent a car. breakfast was good. however we were not impressed by the service. We were 4 people staying in 2 rooms, one was in good size and the second was tiny. room were not cleaned, just beds made up (did not empty trash cans). The reception staff although very nice, had little knowledge about any tourist information and were not helpful with our questions. Breakfast staff was great. worst part was air conditioning- although room was very very hot, the window would not open and the reception staff refused (!) to turn on the air conditioning. We had to get outside since it was so hot.

Very conveniently located next to the archeological area and other tourist attractions in syracuse. Breathtaking view from the top floor where you have breakfast and lovely small swimming-pool on the top terrace. I couldn't try since it was March, but it looked very nice! Extra stars for the staff both at the reception and at brekafast, really eager to please and super kind. A great variety of food at breakfast and probably the best bread you can find in Syracuse, plus home-made ricotta cakes, fresh fruit and waht not! You can also park your car free of charge in the innner courtyard. Unfortunately no nice restaurant or pizzeria near-by and a bit too much heating in the rooms, luckily you can open the window!

The Mercure was a brilliant place to stay in Syracuse. Clean, great amenities, roof-top pool, spa, warm, welcoming, accomodating and good location. The only constructive criticism is that at the time we stayed (late September) there was no choice for dinner and just one individual that didn't match up in his service and manner to the rest of the team. But let me stress, that was one individual. In general everyone else was brilliant. It's the place to stay if you like a modern, stylish hotel for enjoying lovely cocktails or a cold beer by the pool before heading out to explore a really friendly, beautiful and interesting town.
