The Fiume Ciane is unique in that apparently it's the only place in Europe where papyrus grows naturally. We took the boat somewhere on the road that runs along the river Ciane, not from the harbour in Siracusa.
Nice views on Siracusa when you set off, then the boat steers up the river Ciane for 20 minutes or so till you reach a spot where the papyrus grows and the boat can't go any further. You get off and walk in the countryside around the papyrus oasis for about 30 minutes (flat, easy for young children) then take the boat back to the starting point.
The views from the boat and during the countryside stroll are pretty. Although you wouldn't go to Sicily for this particular boat trip, it's a nice relaxing break from driving if you're in the area, for adults and children alike.
