Borgo Pantano is a beautiful countryside retreat, about 20 minutes by car from Syracusa's old town: Ortigia. Although it wasn't the easiest of places to find - once off the autostrada the roads are generally narrow, pot-holed and poorly sign posted - it was well worth the 3 hour drive from Palermo.
The hotel has very friendly, polite and helpful staff, especially at reception - they were always willing to give directions and helpful information.
The hotel is set in very spacious grounds, with lots of comfortable courtyard seating areas, where you can enjoy a drink, good book and the sunshine. I particularly liked the kumquat bushes in one of the coutryards. There is a large pool area, with sunloungers, day beds and outdoor sofas, as well as a pool bar.
The self-service breakfast was very copious and offered an excellent range of foods. It was nice to be able to have breakfast outdoors on the terrace. Another nice touch was the fact that free cakes and sweets were always available in reception for sweet-toothed guests.
The rooms are very nice: modern, clean, and comfortable. The bed was large and very relaxing and the rooms are served by wifi internet access. However, our room might have benefited from more soundproofing as you could hear the motorway traffic in the early morning and evening, although this was not a big problem at all. In addition, just as a very minor point, our showerhead was not as clean as it might have been.
We ate dinner twice at the restaurant which was very good, serving tasty local cuisine. The 30€ menu was good value and provided more than enough food to keep even the largest of appetites happy.
It was nice to find a wide range of guests and ages at Borgo Pantano, and everyone was well catered for, the hotel and its grounds being large enough not to feel crowded. We used the Spa one morning; the massage was very relaxing but quite expensive overall. The games room has some exercise machines, a Wii console and table tennis, for those feeling energetic.
All in all, we were very happy with our stay and really did feel relaxed and as if we had 'got away from it all'. We hope to come back again.
P.S. One evening we visited the Agrimilo Agriturismo near Cannicattini - hotel reception had booked for us and we were warmly welcomed on arrival. We were shown around the farm animals and ate some great, home cooked, typically Sicilian dishes. Really worth a visit and excellent value - €25 pp for 4 course meal including wine and guided tour.
