lovely inside this cathedral is different from any other you'll see. the old stone pillars give the cathedral a real authentic feel and its definitely worth going in
At first glance this looks like a typical baroque church but a careful look at the side wall shows you the remaining columns. Once inside you can really see the Temple of Athena. The columns are there and so is the cella. It is remarkable that building still exists. It is,of course, a very nice church but it is the antiquity which makes it so special.
Do NOT pass up the opportunity to see the Temple of Athena!! The piazza in front of the cathedral is large and beautiful, and the interior is breathtaking. To see the ancient columns juxtaposed next to more modern religious (Catholic) elements ... they're just gorgeous. The feeling of reverence in the cathedral is palpable. Beautiful murals on the ceilings, baroque architecture, and the ancient, pitted columns all create a unique experience. Even our 8-year-old and 4-year-old were impressed!
Just fascinating to see a Greek temple repurposed into a church. The square outside is very pretty as well. The church isn't full of art, so it's a relatively short visit, but atmospheric.
