We searched for a hotel for a few nights in Palermo. Unfortunately, almost all hotels with a reasonable TA rating and good location, were either full, or charged an outrageous rate for the Friday night (like 500 euro, where the other nights were 90 euro !?!). So we ended up booking 3 nights at B&B Panoramus, because it had a good TA score.
The B&B is located on the 5th floor of a large Palazzo along the busy Via Roma, right in the historic center of town. Actually, it's half of the 5th floor, the other half is another B&B. Panoramus has 5 rooms, each one of them in the original setting of this old building, keeping the structure, the doors, the floors and the high ceilings with paintings all original. The whole building breaths the 1920-1930's. Only the windows were replaced with new windows with additional sound proofing and an individually controlled airco was installed. The elevator to the 5th floor is authentic old-style: in an open structure with manual doors.
The bathrooms are private per room, but are not located adjacent to the room. All 5 bathrooms are grouped together at the end of the hall. This is clearly advertised by the B&B and also reconfirmed when booking, so nobody can complain about this. The owner provides bath robes to go from the room to the bathroom. But it remains an inconvenience having to exit from the room which you should be aware of booking there, but again we knew this. The bathrooms are a bit dated, and could do with an renovation. The shower towels are refreshed every day, but are really small (about 40x60 cm I would guess).
With the new windows, the considerable traffic noise level of the very busy Via Roma is largely removed, but it is still there. If you are a light sleeper, the sirens of the police/ambulances, the busses passing by or noisy motorcycles can still be heard. Even more important for your sleep is the noise coming from the inside: because of the original, old doors, the sound proofing to the hall is quite poor. Any noise from the hall comes straight in the room. e.g. footsteps, locking/unlocking of the doors (which happens regularly as bathrooms are outside the room) or people talking. So if you are a light sleeper, you may consider searching elsewhere. The decoration of the rooms & furniture is in the style of the building. The bed has a good mattress, and pillows with different thicknesses were available (good attention for details from the owner !).
Owner Giovanni had a very warm welcome for us, and gave us a long explanation on how the B&B operates, and a lot of explanation of the city (what to see, where to dine, where to eat ice cream, where to be aware for purse thieves, etc.).
The breakfast is a strength of this B&B: good croissants and a large piece of apple cake for each, 2 types of bread, and cornflakes. Several sorts of jam, honey, chocolate paste (Nutella), yogurt, and fruit were available, as well as biscuits. There was coffee, thee, several sorts of juice and water. Only point of criticism for the breakfast: the toaster is on top of a 1.7m high fridge. This means that when the toast is ready, only really tall people can see where to take the toast... others may burn their fingers when trying to take the toast. I would recommend to Giovanni to put a small table next to the fridge for this.
The city of Palermo is completely different than the Trapani area we visited the days before: it's a city with a crazy, hectic traffic (I'm used to driving in Italy, but this time in Palermo, I parked my car after arrival and did not use it anymore until we left). The city has different faces: some buildings are really clean and well kept, other buildings and/or area's are a bit run down, and others are nothing more than a garbage dump. All in all, the city gives a dirty impression.
Not so much in Restaurants where I think we were treated correctly, but more in bars, we had the impression to get the “tourist treatment”: quite often unfriendly and charging rather high bills (as you usually do not get a menu, one cannot check what they will charge upfront). For a simple glass of housewine as a pre-dinner drink, we were charged upto 6 euro's.
