“authentic place...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

We searched for a hotel for a few nights in Palermo. Unfortunately, almost all hotels with a reasonable TA rating and good location, were either full, or charged an outrageous rate for the Friday night (like 500 euro, where the other nights were 90 euro !?!). So we ended up booking 3 nights at B&B Panoramus, because it had a good TA score.

The B&B is located on the 5th floor of a large Palazzo along the busy Via Roma, right in the historic center of town. Actually, it's half of the 5th floor, the other half is another B&B. Panoramus has 5 rooms, each one of them in the original setting of this old building, keeping the structure, the doors, the floors and the high ceilings with paintings all original. The whole building breaths the 1920-1930's. Only the windows were replaced with new windows with additional sound proofing and an individually controlled airco was installed. The elevator to the 5th floor is authentic old-style: in an open structure with manual doors.

The bathrooms are private per room, but are not located adjacent to the room. All 5 bathrooms are grouped together at the end of the hall. This is clearly advertised by the B&B and also reconfirmed when booking, so nobody can complain about this. The owner provides bath robes to go from the room to the bathroom. But it remains an inconvenience having to exit from the room which you should be aware of booking there, but again we knew this. The bathrooms are a bit dated, and could do with an renovation. The shower towels are refreshed every day, but are really small (about 40x60 cm I would guess).

With the new windows, the considerable traffic noise level of the very busy Via Roma is largely removed, but it is still there. If you are a light sleeper, the sirens of the police/ambulances, the busses passing by or noisy motorcycles can still be heard. Even more important for your sleep is the noise coming from the inside: because of the original, old doors, the sound proofing to the hall is quite poor. Any noise from the hall comes straight in the room. e.g. footsteps, locking/unlocking of the doors (which happens regularly as bathrooms are outside the room) or people talking. So if you are a light sleeper, you may consider searching elsewhere. The decoration of the rooms & furniture is in the style of the building. The bed has a good mattress, and pillows with different thicknesses were available (good attention for details from the owner !).

Owner Giovanni had a very warm welcome for us, and gave us a long explanation on how the B&B operates, and a lot of explanation of the city (what to see, where to dine, where to eat ice cream, where to be aware for purse thieves, etc.).

The breakfast is a strength of this B&B: good croissants and a large piece of apple cake for each, 2 types of bread, and cornflakes. Several sorts of jam, honey, chocolate paste (Nutella), yogurt, and fruit were available, as well as biscuits. There was coffee, thee, several sorts of juice and water. Only point of criticism for the breakfast: the toaster is on top of a 1.7m high fridge. This means that when the toast is ready, only really tall people can see where to take the toast... others may burn their fingers when trying to take the toast. I would recommend to Giovanni to put a small table next to the fridge for this.

The city of Palermo is completely different than the Trapani area we visited the days before: it's a city with a crazy, hectic traffic (I'm used to driving in Italy, but this time in Palermo, I parked my car after arrival and did not use it anymore until we left). The city has different faces: some buildings are really clean and well kept, other buildings and/or area's are a bit run down, and others are nothing more than a garbage dump. All in all, the city gives a dirty impression.

Not so much in Restaurants where I think we were treated correctly, but more in bars, we had the impression to get the “tourist treatment”: quite often unfriendly and charging rather high bills (as you usually do not get a menu, one cannot check what they will charge upfront). For a simple glass of housewine as a pre-dinner drink, we were charged upto 6 euro's.

Dear Guest,
thanks for the review and the "very good" vote;

however, I have to make some clarifications:

in the b & b Panormus there're 2 types of rooms:
Rooms with a nice view on the street and inner rooms with windows for natural light and air, I invite the customers to express a preference in the first email, before coming here.

1) Regarding the question of noise you've perceived it's important to note that in six years the b & b Panormus has received 96 reviews; in detail about the quality of sleep: 51 excellent, 17 very good, 2 average ( including your vote; the other vote was given before the change of the fixtures), the other 26 did not express a detailed judgment about the quality of sleep ( they gave very good and excellent overall evaluations); the readers can draw the conclusions.
It's good to specify that the B & B is located on the last floor ( fifth floor with elevator ), the fixtures are excellent and they have double glazing;
I think it's normal if it passes an ambulance or the police with sirens turned on hear a little of noise (if you decide to stay in the historic center of Palermo it's necessary accept vantages and disadvantages).
The doors of the rooms are antiques, restored, in solid wood and handmade; also I reproduced the same color that was used in 1920; It would be an act of vandalism to substitute them with modern doors.
In 20 years of travels I have never seen a bed & breakfast with soundproof doors; the b & b is a house where a family lives and it's not 4 stars hotel that this guest normally chooses ( I noticed this important detail reading the other reviews of this customer ), the services are different and consequently the prices are different.

2) the bathrooms were built 6 years ago, all the taps were replaced one year ago, the walls were painted 8 months ago so I think a renovation is premature.
In the bathrooms there're
small towels: 40x60 cm (for the bidet)
medium towels: 60x90 cm
bathrobes
I think that providing larger towels than 60x90 cm is unnecessary since we furnish the bathrobes and anyway in case of request I would offered willingly bigger ones.

3) the refrigerator is 143 cm high ( not 170) , the toaster is CE marked and complies with all safety standards, anyway I would been happy to put the toaster on the small table but it was better talk with me before to come back at home, I would have solved this thing immediately and with simplicity, I don't understand why you made this observation after 2 months (I make this comment to all the readers of tripadvisor and in particular to my future guests).

Best regards
Giovanni

My husband and I stayed at B&B Panormus for three nights during our trip to Palermo. It is in a beautiful old apartment building that is very easy to reach from the train station. The room was excellent. Ours overlooked the busy street below, but we couldn't hear any street noise at night (nice balcony doors). It's within walking distance to a lot of churches, markets, and restaurants. Giovanni is a wonderful host and easily provided the best breakfasts of any B&B we stayed in. They always included some fresh pastries, fruit, yogurt, dark coffee, etc. On our first day he sat down with us over a map of Palermo and pointed out some important places to visit, and he made a reservation for us at a great restaurant just a couple of blocks from the B&B. Would stay here again.

We stayed here for a few nights over the weekend when the Festino di Santa Rosalia was on (mid-July 2012). The hotel is really well-placed for all the main attractions and places to visit in Palermo. Rooms are attractive, have air con, high ceilings, decent beds and there a private bathroom for each room down the corridor. All rooms are no smoking although you can have one out the window in the corridor outside the room if you like.. Giovanni, the owner, is extremely helpful and will sit down with you and detail on a map all the best ristoranti, foccaccerie, gelaterie and things to do in Palermo. We found his advice and help indispensable and it definitely contributed to a great stay. Highly recommended.

We stayed a couple of nights here and Giovanni is a great host. Spotless Place and really central. The Price was €30 per person on a weekend when Palermo was packed for an annual Patron Saint festival and the breakfast is great.
We woudl stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 3 has an additional room attached with 2 single beds if you need a family room.

Centrally-located to all old Palermo sites, top floor B&B. Giovanni is a wonderful host with excellent local restaurant recommendations. Fabulously high ceilings and every room was very clean. While it isn't ideal to have to leave your room to use your (spotless) private bathroom, we were more than happy to deal with this small inconvenience since everything else was perfect. We also loved that there were only about 5 rooms total and that we didn't feel like tourists in a giant hotel. Amazing value.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Via Roma have a great view. One even has a balcony.
