“No neighborhood for light sleepers...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

Seriously... don't forget to stock up on earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones if you plan to stay here.

Having said that, the advantages of being right in the middle of one of the liveliest and most characteristic neighborhood in Palermo are countless.
Plus, the B&B is impeccably, very tastefully furnished and has excellent price/quality ratio; the owners are extremely friendly and helpful... and the free wi-fi actually works.

Having returned from a three week tour of Europe this was the only place to which we would never return! On arrival at the apartment we discovered that instead of two bedrooms my sister , my husband and I were expected to sleep all in the same room with the one double bed as per picture and a single fold-down bed provided! The woman who met us agreed to move the bed into the dining/ TV room and my sister had three uncomfortable nights sleeping there. We were awoken in the morning to the noise of horses and men yelling. Discovered the stables below! Next the builders next door commend work. Noise of cement mixers and banging. Beware this building will be going on for some time. The apartment is near a corner and at night the noise of motor bikes goes on endlessly. Beeping of horns and reving of engines. Despite being assured by the landlady that she would be on hand to help and trying to seek her out in the office several times, we only saw her once during our stay. Most of time the office looked empty. When we finally made contact in person with another lady in the office we were told that the internet in our room was not working ( the system was down) and there was no printer that we could access to print our next hotel booking.
Admittedly the apartment was very clean and there were plentiful supplies of packaged muffins, jams etc. But if you want a good night's sleep, a helping hand and local advice do not stay at this apartment!!

Room Tip: Check out accomodation very carefully,

This hotel is located in a popular district of Palermo, surrounded by rubbish and very noisy neighbours. Actually the noise was such that I am wondering if people in this city are actually sleeping at all; the fact is that we didn't. Double glazing could be a good investment for this hotel. There is air conditioning, which works, but makes more noise than a jumbo jet landing. The price was not so cheap for the quality provided. For breakfast it is best to go to a nearby bar as the one you are asked to prepare yourself in the hotel is barely eadable.
The good point was that the owner and the girl in charge were very friendly and helpful. The room was big (but cold).

We had a very big appartement for we two, with two big rooms, a living room with a small kitchen and a big bathroom. Yes, we were on the top of the building, so we had to use the stairs, because there is no lift. But it was not a problem.

The only problem is the noise on the street, which makes it somehow difficult to sleep well. But on the other hand, we were in the historical center of Palermo, which was very exciting.

We only had a problem: The last morning, we left the keys there, as we were told to do, and when we came back to get our baggage, there was nobody there. We called and the people responsible on the B&B where out of Palermo. We had to wait about one hour until they arranged somebody to come and open us the door!! So do not return the keys until you leave definitively Casa Orioles with all your belongings.

The B & B is a very huge apt with a living rm, a big bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with all you need to cook. Very convenient especially after a 4 days trip in Roma where we dined out everyday.

And the owner is very helpful. We didn't arrive on the time mentioned in email as the flight delayed in Roma. The owner arrived after 5 mins we called her.
She provided a lot of info for travelling in Palermo which i found is quite useful.

Location is good, 5-10 mins walk from the cathedral. But without a map, will be difficult to find as it's in the small street.

Breakfast is simple but good enough to fill the stomach.

The only problem is water heater is small, my partner couldn't have enough hot water for shower after me.

We stayed here for one night before an early flight to milan. This is a bed and breakfast but really it is a self catering apt with some milk, coffee, tea juice and toast in the kitchen. However if this sounds ordinary it really isn't, it is one of the least ordinary places I have stayed.
Once you have eventually found the place and negotiated your way around some back streets in the maze that is the 'historical centre' you will be faced with a beautifully restored house that seems to be apts. Ours had an adequate kitchen, a sitting room, a nice bathroom and a huge bedroom. What stuck us most was the beautiful floor tiles and the shutter doors out on to the little balconies. The place was also spotless!
I wish I could say the same for outside as it looked like the rubbish hadn't been lifted for ages, but surprisingly it didn't smell. I would have to say that if you want a quite nights sleep book a big hotel with double glazing as we were up nearly all night with the scooters going round constantly. Or take earplugs!!
If you are willing to be a little more adventurous and maybe want to see a little off the main areas come here.

Having been warned, we made a day trip to Palermo from Cefalu (on a quiet Sunday) to sort out our arrival. So that went well. Narrow alleyways are the key words here, but we actually had no trouble finding parking on the st.
Our apartment was gorgeous and huge, with a lock-off BR that our daughter used when she arrived three days later.
There are two things to note about the Casa Orioles-I found the owner indifferent (slow to reply to emails, not clear on the booking). The apt. we requested on the second floor was occupied (I have a dodgey knee) and our proffered accomodation was over 48 steps up. Thank goodness for the handrails.
Secondly the kitchen facilities were of the sort you would find in an Embassy Suites: (no microwave, though). Two burner cooker top, small sink, resort-style refrigerator. The cookware was not up to snuff for the person wanting to make more than a tinned soup or breakfast. Rather than a coffee maker, it seems that many (indifferent) owners in Italy think that a traveller doesn't mind learning the intracacies of their little expresso contraption (which I know how to use but I don't want to drink expresso). This sounds gripey, I know, but having owned a villa rental business for 15 years, I can tell you that an automatic drip coffee maker is de riguer for those who offer a vacation rental to foreign visitors.
Otherwise, for location, charm and style our apt. at Casa Orioles was superior to any other in Sicily and I would definately go again. Palermo should not be missed!
Other comments have painted the scene well so I will let them speak for the neighborhood and its occupants.
All supplies easy walk, bus stop at Duomo five min. walk (even with bad knee). The Palentine Chapel ten minute walk.
Gelato in Palermo the best in Sicily. My favorite was the chocolate on the corner of Via Roma that is opposite the end of the Vucceria market, about two blocks from via Vittorio Emmanule.
Be sure to visit the catacombs: and for lovers of The Leopard, Lampadusa's grave is in the cemetary next to the catacombs.
