Three of us had dinner at Tonno Subito at the end of August, and had an excellent evening. You could easily miss this small gem tucked away 5 minutes from the Teatro Massimo, but it would be your loss! It's small, cozy, with a tasteful, minimalist Mediterranean decor, great background music, really nice and welcoming staff - perfect for a nice evening with friends.
It's main quality is obviously the incredibly fresh sea-food. The menu changes every day and is short, as it should be in any place where the chef prides himself on preparing everything fresh from scratch for each guest. It's a delicious mix of perfectly prepared classics (mussels, fried calamari, stuffed zucchini blossoms tempura-style) and, even better, exquisite improvisations by the chef himself (the pasta with gambas and a stracciatella sauce was just stunning, and I still regret that I forgot to ask the chef what was in that surprising bitter green sauce that so perfectly accompanied the gambas / fish / aubergine rolls). The local wine was unexpensive but obviously chosen to perfectly match the food. On top of that, the prices are really low for the level of the cooking - each of us had antipasti / primi / secondi / dessert or coffee + 3 bottles of wine, and the total bill came to less than 120 euros.
Far from the overpriced tourist crap, the pseudo "fresh" frozen fish, the unimaginative "Italian classics" you'll find at every corner, Tonno Subito is a real gem, marrying the best local traditions with creative flair and exquisite taste. Don't miss it!
