Description: Sergio and Angela Spano run the restaurant since 2004. Both come from families of restaurateurs who have passed on their passion and love for the traditional cuisine of Palermo, the same passion that today move in their work, seeking the scents and flavors of the past and selecting all the raw materials with care. Caponata, Sardinian warbler, daisies ca n'ciova, squid ink pasta with sea urchins, fresh fish of the Mediterranean, they explode like a vortex of fragrances giving you a blast from the past.

“Sicilian fish fantasies fulfilled”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

I am a chef visiting Italy to eat. I came to Palermo to eat fish, and Da Spanò surpassed my expectations. Classic Sicilian preparations with a delicate touch, elegantly presented but not over-dressed. Fish is sourced from the Capo Mercato a few feet away, and couldn't be fresher. Many of the dishes are from the classic Sicilian repertoire, polpetini di sarde, swordfish involtini, stuffed calamari, etc., but prepared with a fresh perspective and attention to detail.

Service was friendly and welcoming. I felt like I belonged even as an obvious tourist. No pretension, no pandering to tourists, just graceful, generous treatment.

Lovely selection of Sicilian wines.

Somehow I was lucky enough to have rented an apartment on airbnb one block from Da Spano. Many restaurants in Palermo are touristy, trashy, overpriced, overrated, or chaotic. Da Spano was just great good, reasonably priced, comfortably environment, warm service.

Big thanks to Sergio and Angela for the excellent meals.

“Good for Seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

We went to Ristorantino da Spanò for an authentic Sicilian seafood dinner on the advice of a local couple who have eaten there many times. We were not disappointed. The food was fresh, excellently prepared and very tasty. We also enjoyed the delicious bread that was served with our meal. Our one disappointment was that the wine we chose was not available, nor was our second choice. We would definitely go there again.

“Good value family restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

We went as a large group and had the 30 Euro fish menu - lots of courses of good fresh fish and shell fish. Enjoyed ourselves too.

“Superb local cooking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

Not easy to find, and perched in a corner of a car park it certainly doesn't waste money on fancy furniture and decorations but this was one of the best fish meals I have ever eaten. Exquisitely fresh and perfectly balanced waves of local dishes were brought to the table. Don't ask for the menu - just ask for a fish meal (or meat meal if you must), tell them how many courses you want and let them choose what is freshest and best. We had ceviche of prawns with tender baby octopus, then one of the best sardine polpetti that I have ever had (fresh herbs, baby grapes, chopped pine nuts in with the sardines and a spectacular tomato sauce), then fresh sea urchin on toast, wonderful fried prawns and tiny baby squid (five or six to a mouthful), an amazing seafood casarecci stuffed with clams and prawns and other shellfish, and then the best and freshest piece of swordfish that I have ever had. Lemon granita to follow, all washed down with a local wine. It came to €40 a head with a generous tip. The staff spoke very little English but couldn't have been more charming and friendly, and it was a pleasure to be able to shake hands with the (glamorous lady)chef at the end of the evening.

“Brilliant. Great service and excellent food. ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

I know there's one bad review here but for us, it was totally the opposite. Service excellent, fish fresh and everything very scrummy. I hate eating out normally because I'm usually really disappointed but not here. Only Italian diners when we went both for lunch and then dinner (it was that good). Complimenti tutti in cucina.
