“Our best out of 6 hotels in Sicily, 7 in Italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

Some of the prior reviews from this hotel have had some concerns, particularly about cleanliness and maintenance, so from my experience I would have to say that this place must have changed a lot, because this was the nicest hotel in which we stayed during our 13-day, 6 hotel tour of Sicily (7 hotels in Italy if we count the Fiumicino Airport Hilton). We didn't see any issues of cleanliness or maintenance during our 3-night stay; although one of our lamps flickered, when I reported it, someone came up promptly and replaced the lamp when replacing the light-bulb didn't work. Our room, upgraded due to HHonors Gold status, was very spacious, comfortable, and quiet. Most of the rooms face either a courtyard or a quiet street, and there was no hallway noise, or noise from other rooms during our stay.
The staff were all polite, helpful, and fluent in English. The TV had a range of channels in multiple languages, in addition to the many Italian channels. The breakfast was certainly the best spread among the various hotels during this trip (included for Hilton Gold members). The internet was above average in speed--enough to use YouTube although not as fast as at home. I've had better connections, but most of the hotels in which we stayed (mainly rated 4*'s) were slower. The restaurant food was good and surprisingly reasonably-priced, especially their fixed-price menu.
My main caveat with this hotel is that there is no parking anywhere near the hotel, so getting your car from the front desk is a half-hour affair. The first time I got our car, I went to the front desk after waiting 20 minutes, and the guy said that the cars were taken somewhere "near the port." The day we left, I asked the front desk guy to start the process when we finished breakfast because all we had to do was finish packing and bring down our luggage. Unfortunately, this was the only time the staff didn't come through because he hadn't started the process when I came to check out, so we were stuck waiting for another half hour. The hotel is a 15-minute walk from the main sights in the old town, but the flip side of that is that the traffic getting to the hotel isn't too bad. It's on the side of town closer to the Palermo airport.

Nice hotel good location, rooms were of a good standard and similar to Hiltons around the world. Dinner in the restaraunt/bar not fantastic by any means. Breakfast superb as it should be at 15 euro extra per person.

Placed at the end of Palermo's "5th Avenue" (Bd. de la Liberta), Excelsior Hilton is a cosy 4* hotel ready to fulfill your travel plans either for Palermo or as a base for the rest of the Sicily. We stayed for 11 nights + 8 nights in 2005. Pro's: Good value for money, very good location, newly refurbished, reception desk and cleaning staff kind and proffesional, good restaurant. Con's: poor internet service, no parking space, claustrofobic 3rd floor rooms, when 1-2 tourist buses arrive, breakfast tends to became messy.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms to be preferred.

Luxury and quality at its best. Fillipo is your gracious host and the staff is great. Great location and old world charm. Great value and right on libertad which is the finest street in Palermo. Staying for 5 nights and I wish longer. Don't miss this one. Le volte restaurant close by.

Room Tip: Go to boloterro to eat but you need reservations and only 4 blocks away

The hotel is in a very good location of Palermo. The exterior of the building is very nice. However, as soon as you enter the lobby you notice that the hotel needs a renovation. The carpets in the rooms are dirty, although we got an upgrade to a better room. The restaurant was a special disaster. We went there for a light lunch. But in this hotel even tomato and mozzarella that will be reasonable is hard to get. And the Ceasar salad was the worst we ever had. I believe people should avoid the hotel to force Hilton to upgrade it. Also, somebody has already made the comment that the shower doesnot drain. As a result it has mold and other strange black stains.

Very friendly staff and most of them knew English very well. They were extremely helpful with dinner out recommendations and many other questions we had. Everyone in the hotel was very nice. I have asked for a quiet room and was given a top floor room with skylights. I was also told I can change my mind if did not like what was allocated, but the room was great. The location of the hotel is perfect as well. The bus from the airport stopped just in front of the hotel and it was an easy walk to the centre of Palermo. The breakfast buffet was a great mix of continental and typical
Italian food, very nice start to your day.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet room ask for a 3rd floor room with skylights.
