“Grand old dame needs a facelift”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

After touring Italy for 2 weeks from Venice down to Sicily, this was the last stop. It is a fine old hotel, but as one other reviewer noted is in dire need of refurbishment. Carpets are dirty, most of the lights in my room were non- functional and the a/c was mediocre at best. Because it was located in the ghetto, we were hesitant to walk too far for dinner our first night so settled for the hotel dining room. Food was good, service non-existent. Evidently we didn't look important enough to the captain be cause after he took our dinner order didn't return to the table again. Asked him and another waiter for wine list, another waiter brought it 15 minutes later. No one ever returned to see if we wanted wine. After dinner, no offer of coffee or dessert, had to track someone down to get the check. On the way out, Captain was falling over himself to thank us for coming, surprised he knew we were there. Won't return. It's no wonder it is no longer a Hilton franchise.

Dear Sir,

We were very sorry to hear that your experience at our hotel was not a pleasant one.

Regarding our restaurant service (which usually receives a high rating from our guests), we have taken note of your complaint and we will investigate to assure this does not happen again.

Furthermore, we were sorry to read in your review that you believed our hotel to be outdated, however please bear in mind that The Grand Hotel Villa Igiea dates back to the 19th century, making it over one century old. Periodically renovations are made in order to maintain the original structure designed by the famous architect, Ernesto Basile.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review.

Best regards,

the building is stunning. the people were very nice but have no idea what good services is to call this hotel a 5 star hotel is a lie. it looks like one but way over priced food and drinks with bad service gives this place a 3 star at best ! the ac in the room sucks.

Older facility. Lovely grounds. Friendly staff and easy check-in. Graciously wide hallways lined with massive mirrors and black and white photos of previous celebrity guests. Ours was an elegant room with entry, high ceilings, fabric covered walls, reverse fabric drapes, king size bed, two reading chairs, large writing desk, two bedside tables and a large wardrobe, overlooked pool and marina. Modern tiled spacious bath. Towels are plentiful, robes and toiletries supplied. Total effect was elegant -- except the carpet in the public hallways is very dirty, obviously vacuumed, but very dirty.
Had cocktails on the veranda one evening and dinner in the restaurant and both were fine.
Hotel pool is lovely and overlooks the small marina. Towels are provided poolside.
Some things will prevent us from returning.
1. the phone did not work – couldn’t call the front desk or housekeeping to pick up laundry. I walked to the front desk to report the phone and request housekeeping and both were attended to almost immediately. Except the phone only partially worked after it was fixed – I could call housekeeping, but not the front desk. Also, the phone repairman fixed the TV. I suppose I could have figured out the wiring issue, but I wasn’t inclined to go crawling behind the TV – nor did I feel it was my place to do so!
2. Also the Air Conditioning was ineffective. Front desk sent us repair persons three times during our four day stay, and once the man even returned with a ladder so he could adjust the vents. I admit it was better, but not good.
3. The hotel offers a shuttle service to the downtown area, but it is only a five times a day between 10 am and 7 pm and not conducive to when we needed to use it. We were told it needed to be booked in advance since it was a small van that held only eight.
4. Too often when we left the hotel there was no one at the front door to hail a taxi for us. Once we even had to go to the street to get our own. Cabs into the downtown area ran 10-20 euros.
5. Hotel also offers shuttle service to their private beach – for 10 euros – to include umbrellas and towels. Didn’t use it.
6. Internet access is available in rooms for a fee but it was very expensive considering that elsewhere in Sicily our internet connections have been included with the room. Frustratingly, the connection constantly dropped out. Probably not the fault of the hotel, except in the service provider they chose.

If you want a hotel near the CBD, this isn’t the place for you and constantly using cabs gets too expensive.
If you want a beach resort atmosphere, you probably want to be on the beach and don’t want to be charged for a shuttle to a private beach.
If you want a nice hotel with a pool and can tolerate the little annoyances, this could be the place for you.
I’d gladly trade the nightly turndown/sweet on the pillow service for basic services – phone, air conditioning, a consistent internet connection and a doorman to hail a cab. Lovely, elegant, friendly, too expensive for what you get, and it isn’t a place we will use again.

I spent two nights there recently at the end of a business trip to Palermo. The hotel property was stunning and my room was huge with an additional sitting room attached. This is a 4 star hotel that could be a star hotel with a little work. Several things in the room did not work well including the AC, toilet, radio, and TV. My other concern is that although the hotel is appropriately priced, the food is overpriced. For example, I had a simple lunch at the grill by the pool the other day (sea bass a few grilled vegetables and one glass of wine). The price was over 50 euros. If I stayed again, I would take my meals outside the hotel where the prices are moderate and the quality at many places high.

Spent a couple of nights there at the end of a recent holiday, the restaurant was fantastic, great service by the Headwaiter, Sommelier etc. The building is stunning, grounds views all exceeding our expectations. The one negative point would be that receptionists were mostly unhelpful and disinterested.

Imagine you want to see, feel and live the real beauty of Sicily. And imagine you're looking for real top service, "grandeur" and luxury all over the (historic) place. And imagine you want all this along the sea side. Well... don't look any further. You can just stay here and enjoy everything you were dreaming of.
Go for a room with sea view and a balcony. That balcony will be large enough to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and whatever other things you like to do while looking at the sea, the passing by ferries to the mainlands and the little yacht port just in front of your room. While in your bathroom the heavenly products from Acqua di Parma - yes, about all of it and no, not in small test packings, are waiting for you to be used.
The swimming pool at the sea side, the terraces, the bars... and the hotel yacht are waiting.

Palermo is one dirty and depressing city -- trash just about everywhere. Trash-garbage collection points absolutely awful.
Hotel was like entering another world. Nice location bordering a large marina. Our high-ceiling deluxe room was quite comfortable and we got what we requested -- balcony with sea view and eventually got the king-size bed.
Breakfast buffet had it all. Dinners excellent. Eating area outside very pleasant as it abuts a garden. Adequate pool with plenty of lounges and an attendant. All staff were courteous and helpful.
However, it is not a 5-star hotel.
Shower had little power, really annoying. One sink, inconvenient. One elevator, long waits.
Beach is 10-20 mins away accessed via a limited schedule courtesy van -- make reservations at the front desk soonest. Beach is covered with umbrellas and screaming Italians. We walked around the beach area, discovered no good looking places to eat. Mostly kiosk type fast foods. Trash everywhere.
Hotel is a few kilometers from the center. Be prepared for an adventure if you go there.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony and sea view.
