I laughed as I read some of the previous poor reviews for Piazza Borsa. Other travelers who felt it was "menacing" or the neighborhood was "dirty". Clearly, they've never been in a city which has existed for thousands of years and has some history. My wife and I and my two daughters spent a delightful two nights and two days in the Piazza Borsa. The hotel is brand new so it is in tip top shape. Everything is terrific. The beds, sheets and pillows are first class. The hotel manager was very kind and everyone was attentive. A very comfortable hotel of the 4 star class in the center of historical Palermo. Every night and day we walked out the door for an adventure to see Palermo or find a restaurant or gelato. The fact that we were in the center of the city was a bonus. We walked to our dinners and never felt uncomfortable at all...but we've traveled a great deal.
The Piazza Borsa can be strangely empty at times. It's a large hotel, but that didn't bother me. I enjoyed having a drink in the beautiful atrium center. We loved the roof garden for breakfast and the 'standard' breakfast was lovely. When we wanted something cooked for us, like fried eggs and bacon, they were done swiftly and nicely. All we had to do was order it! (one other reviewer complained about no eggs cooked for them - they must not have asked.)
Not many of the staff spoke English, but that didn't bother us. After all, we knew we were in a foreign country. I can't imagine an Italian coming to Peoria and expecting everyone to speak Italian. Expecting everyone to speak English just seems like hubris.
Anyway, Piazza Borsa was a pleasure. We can highly recommend it. Just watch out driving in Palermo!
