The bell tower and astronomical clock are situated in a small piazza that is also home to the restored Messina cathedral and a picturesque fountain. The piazza is located no more than three minutes walk from the cruise ship terminal.
Unfortunately we were not in the piazza at 12 noon to see the clock in full operation but its figurines were still an impressive sight even in their stationary state. The bell tower and the cathedral were also impressive both from an architectural and an artistic point of view.
The piazza is a draw card for tourists as it is also the base for a tourist "train" that travels the roads to show visitors the sights of Messina and there are several small cafes and snack bars in the vicinity.
Well worth a visit whilst you are in Messina. A nice place to stop for a rest and a break from your busy tourist activities.
