“bad experience”

The hotel is located in a dangerous street. Actually, it does not look right - neither from outside, nor from inside.
The cleaning of the room was not performed on daily basis. The rooms that are shown within the pictures are not all the same. The wireless works only on the reception. The hairdryer does not work. The people from the reception speak Italian only.

The good news is that nothing disappeared from the room.

Basically, it was a bad unexpected experience.

Room Tip: I recommend to make an in-depth research when choosing the hotel from both perspective - the locatio...

When you arrive... you are shown to a big wooden door and a buzzer. There is no sign to say what the place is called and only has the name of the place on the buzzer you have to press on the bottom of a 12 button panel.

So you push the buzzer and the door opens. You then find yourself walking down a really dodgy looking alley way and basically you see some stairs. So you start walking up the stairs and the entire place looks like a scene from the movie 'Hostel' so already my mind is thinking what the hell am i doing here....

So a friendly looking guy appears and tells you to follow him (at least thats ewhat i thought he meant...) And we go to the check in desk and the place shows no more sign of potential!

You have to show him your passport so he can check you in with your passport number and then he gives it straight back (Phew!!)

He then grabs a set of keys and takes me to the room. So we are waking up the dodgy looking stairwell with wires hanging out all over the place and old battered walls.

On the ay we go through several doors and then 'EVERYTHING' Changed.....

We went through another door and the place was amazing! Beautiful decoration throughout and very high quality.

My room was at the very top of the building and had a double bed and also a single bed. A flat screen T.V and all the usual things you expect from a quality room.

The bathroom had a Shower cubicle in it with a steam room function which was fantastic! and the water pressure was great too!.

The toilet and Be-day we of the highest quality also and so was the sink unit!.

I noticed a Cat5e outlet in the corner of the room on day 2 of my trip so i tried plugging my laptop in and hey presto...I had FREE internet too!!!!

So you start reading this review and think OMG!!! but then it has a wonderful surprise at the end!

Downside:

1. The staff speak NO English so the obvious issues...
2. No Kettle in the room
3. I haven't seen any of what i would call breakfast
4. The area looks a bit dodgy but it is by no means the RED light district so pay no attention to the other reviews that say it is.

I wholeheartedly recommend this place as somewhere to stay and i'm a Northerner that NEVER uses the word Beautiful about anything (except the wife of course ;-)...)

Room Tip: Bring your own Tea bags! Buy some milk and use the HIDDEN fridge that is in the desk unit by the m...

I am truly astonished at the Professional photographs. I can hardly believe that it is the same hotel/ B&B. We had what we thought was two of the four rooms available neither of which were shown in the hotel photos. As previous reviews no sign of a terrace, we did glimpse an area up the stairs from the reception area which might have been used as a restaurant but were not allowed up there.
To begin, we only ended up at the De Curtis in an emergency because our beautiful rooms at the No 2 Hotel Una Palace had been cancelled by an unscrupulous website having taken our money. So you can imagine the shock when the taxi rocked up outside this establishment, we remained fixed to the seats in the taxi in disbelief until the driver was forced to get out and point to the door bell with the name De Curtis on it. Down to a very few choices of rooms available in town we were committed to at least one night. Teeth gritted we entered the courtyard and climbed steps past the death defying hole in the wall without any railings to stop you falling through. The reception was manned by a friendly guy, who spoke no English at all, we managed to convey we would like to see the rooms before parting with the cash only option. Not great, very small but at least were clean. Rooms were relatively comfortable, but the sheets and pillowcases were an unattractive shade of grey and seriously wished I had not looked at the pillow under the pillowcase. Slept the rest of the night with my t-shirt over the top to minimise contact with the bedding.
Breakfast was plentiful but very uninspiring, coffee cold and all presented on a tray to be consumed in your room, only one chair so one of us had to perch. But not for very long as we bid a hasty retreat and checked out before nine!
When all's said and done, we slept ok and was better than the other option of a park bench.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms on the website because we sure didn't get one!

The B&B is average, and it could turn into mediocre depending on the expectations. What could make it a good experience is the chance to feel like being in an old house of Catania in one of its alleys. Although the location is very good near the centre, the street is somehow grey, there are groups of well-behaved immigrants and two prostitutes during the night. The exterior is a plain darkish building, but already the inside has character and the rooms are big, relatively clean and well-furnished, with character as well, somehow like some old Toto movie. That’s worth the experience. My room near the entry was fine, you have to walk few stairs to reach the bathroom. Breakfast, served in the room, is too poor for Sicily standards. Staff try to be helpful.

My fiancee and I have just got back from the De Curtis B&B (as it says on the door - it is not a hotel). The photographs are misleading - there is no terrace or restaurant where you can have breakfast, the 'hotel' is on the third floor of what from the outside looks like a stable door with no sign and a very old staircase. The breakfast consisted of some dry melba toasts, a pre-packed croissant and instant cappuccino, which were delivered to the room (not served in the non-existent restaurant or terrace). What is more, we only received breakfast on one day out of seven (on one occasion, we waited until about 11am and still no breakfast). Its saving grace was the friendly and helpful staff, especially Alessandro (Italian only) and Rita (Italian and English) who recommended restaurants at a discount. Another plus was the fact the B&B served us well as a base, as it was well placed between the beach and the city centre and also very close to the bus and train station. Contrary to other comments, the surrounding area is not bad, but it is very much everyday Catania rather than tourist-oriented.

Not easy to find from the outside as no sign only a small number with bell. Staff didn't speak English Staff locked myself, colleague and 15 students out so we were unable to enter the property and then denied doing it even through we heard him security latch on the door. The hotel itself is in the 'red-light district' of the city so it was not safe for the students to be out in the evening The breakfast was delivered to the room and consisted of a rock hard mini croissant and warm milk (apparently this is a traditional Italian breakfast) all rooms had different items delivered ranging from biscuits and a jar of chocolate spread to cold coffee and NO water.
Only good thing was an ok bed.

Room Tip: AVOID at all costs!

We thought the cab driver had made a mistake when he dropped us off in this neighborhood. When we entered the De Curtis, we entered through what used to be an old stable, and it still looked that way. Our room was large and clean with a double bath and a small, dirty balcony.
One place they advertise they are a hotel-if they are they should make the bed more than just the first night of the three we were there, they should have provided more than one roll of toilet paper ( yes, we actually ran out-I suppose we could have asked for more but we wanted to see what would happen. We ended up using our own) and they should have emptied the waste basket. If they were a B & B they should provide more than a sticky coffee pot, instant coffee ( no cream or sugar) and 2 pre packaged rolls on the 1st day and none after that. We will never go back. We stayed in many hotels and B & B's on this trip-this is the only one that is not getting a good review. Trip Advisor really blew it on this one.
