“Good hotel but rather impersonal and very dark”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2012

I stayed here for 3 nights with a friend and the room was very smartly furnished with plenty of space but, as the Rough Guide says, the lighting is very dim and therefore we found the room rather depressing. The outside terrace is lovely and makes up for the lack of light in the rest of the hotel. Reception staff were charming and very helpful, with excellent English. Catania itself is all right as a place to stay with good transport links but found the bus terminals very confusing!

We planned to stayed in Catania for 3 nights on our tour of the south of Italy, and our choice to stay in Catania, and in this hotel was great. The rooms are funky, fun, and comfortable. The personel are nice, specially the guy on the reception who speaks English, French,Italian all well was really helpful. Too bad we forgot to ask his name.
The only thing it didn't work well was the wireless internet connection in our bedroom, but they send a technician and tried to fix it, so we had to use the wire, but that was fine.
The parking is a bit weird, because you have to drive thru this narrow entrance, and park behind the hotel and share the parking places with a nice and clasicc italian group of apartments. I think since we went in the low season we found parking easily.
In general we liked the hotel, rooms, breakfast (lovely capuccinos), reception personel, and location! The location was great, just walking distance to most restaurants and bars.
We would be back.

Room Tip: Rooms next to the restaurant (first floor)could be noisy because they have parties sometimes.

Just a quick review to say that we had an excellent stay at the Hotel Royal for one night (our first night in Catania). We were greeted by name when we arrived (had never been there before!), likely due to our late arrival -- about 11:15 pm.

Room was smallish but fine for one night. Had some issues with internet (otherwise would have rated 5 stars). Had a wonderful breakfast up on their rooftop restaurant area -- great views of the city. Then walked to the very nearby historical center (don't miss the fish market) and had a marvelous time exploring the sites of the city until noon, when we checked out.

Hotel staff spoke English -- which I was not certain I would find in Sicily. Hotel also assisted in getting us a taxi to take us to the Hertz location near the autostrada (not the airport location).

Should I travel back to Catania, I would most definitely stay at the Hotel Royal again.

This was our first Sicilian and Catania trip. Arriving via train from Taormina, we took a short 5-7 min taxi ride to the front of the Hotel Royal. Having reserved its Royal or Norma suite, I was very happy with its 60-65sqm of spaciousness - a sitting hall with table and two arm chairs, dinning table with 4 chairs. Then separated by doors, is the 4 pillar poster bed on a raised platform and a sofa bed facing the street.

The suite's bathroom was quite big and comes with a high tech Jacuzzi shower in its centre - large enough for two to enjoy a fun filled shower together! There were two sinks in there, one was skillfully crafted into a Neo-Classical console and mirror - really nice as I have not yet seen something like this. The bathroom was facing the courtyard while the suite has two front balconies facing a busy road - noisy during the day.

Though the suite was not spankling new, it was rather well maintained. Of course, drawers in the walk-in closet behind the poster bed could have been better cleaned. Not a problem for a us staying only one night but for those who are staying longer, enjoy lots of closet and storage space! And what attracts me most to this suite was, of course, the ceiling frescoes above the poster bed - great for some admiring before sleeping.

The hotel though not huge, has a boutique feel about it. Staff were all friendly and nice, speaks good English, too. We were told before hand to pay an extra 20 euros for extended check out till 4pm, but when we left at 3pm, the kind lady said it was fine, they are not levying the extra charge on our room bill - really kind and professional indeed!

Location wise, you are 2-3 minutes to Via Etnea, the main shopping street and 5-7 minutes to Piazza Duomo. No fault of the Hotel's but people with mobility issues might want to know that there is 200-300 m of slight slope leading up to the Hotel's entrance. So at the end of the sightseeing day, it may prove a little daunting walking back to the Hotel, just a little, not too bad.

OK, here are the negatives of the Hotel - we only found a CNN channel, no Sky TV here; cannot control suite's temperature and must call down to Reception; bed is harder than I like; no slippers and tissue paper here; no body lotion; shampoo and bath gel must be pumped from huge containers; suite was noisy during the day with no double paned windows. And being a 200-300 year old building, the lights behind the huge projection Sony TV and chandelier goes off once every 10 minutes or so ... felt quite eerie at first but soon got used to it.

Overall, we had a good nights sleep here as when night falls, all was quiet and peaceful - which matters most especially to jet-lagged travellers like us. The breakfasts next day, served at the same level as the Norma suite, was a nice and simple affair with many choices to choose from. Enjoy great views of the surrounding area's roof tops.

A piece of warning for train travellers in Sicily - we had wanted to travel to Palermo from Taormina but it seems the journey takes some 5-6 hours via Messina. But every Friday, there is a scheduled train that departs at 3.45pm from Catania to Palermo, taking only 2hrs 45 min. We thought that it was time saving but it was not meant to be and we had one of the most nightmarish train experiences in Italy during our countless trips.

Our already arrived train at 3pm was delayed till 4.15pm, with the captain finally telling us that his train is not going to Palermo. We would have to take another two more trains in order to reach Palermo. Thus, instead of arriving in Palermo at 6.30pm, we arrived 2 hours later ... tired and frustrated with Trenitalia!!!

Finally, we were told by locals that the more reliable choice would be taking a direct bus from Catania to Palermo, taking about 3 hours only. Learn from our mistakes, dear travellers. A word about Catania - never missed it, especially its lively Fish Market - most memorable of our Sicilian trip!

Room Tip: Take the Norma suite if you are 3-4 persons travelling together, great value, too.

Hotel Royal was a pleasant surprise. Perfectly positioned in the heart of Catania at a walking distance from the scenic Via Etnea, it is an example of how hotels should be run in a smart way. Almost invisible form the outside, it is located in a beautiful baroque palazzo, perfectly renovated. It is both warm, stylish and efficient, a sign that the designer and renovators have done really a good job. Rooms are tidy with a modern and well equipped bathroom. All the set-up is state of the art.
The hotel as a very nice terrace with a stunning view of Catania and the Mount Aetna: breakfast over there in a sunny day is simply a treat! Service is very kind and very efficient. Price is very competitive which makes it a very good value for money. I strongly recommend it both for a business visit and for a romantic week end.

Do NOT stay at this hotel, ever, under any circumstance.. My 4 nite experience Nov 3-7 was the worst at any hotel in any city around the world. My first room was ok, its name La Lupa (303). However after 2 nites the room temperature would not go below 24+C/0ver 75F because there is no ventilation (air conditioning was off for season and heat uncontroolaby on), they moved me to room 202 where it was not supposed to be so hot, and it had a balcony/door. Despite temps in Catania being in the upper 60s/low 70s, and they had the heat on, the room would not cool. This morning, after my first nite in the new room, i awoke with 10 bites on my FACE, and several on my body. The hotel staffwoman said they were mosquitos (in retrospect they must know there is a problem). Since my face was so swollen, i asked what i should do, and the woman at the desk said that the driver would take me to a farmacia before my tour. As i started to get angry i asked if the hotel would pay for the medicine. She said no and there would be no compensation. Even in India, where i got bites in the hotel garden, they summoned a medic to look at me and then comp'd my stay for the inconvenience. This hotel gives Catania and Italy a bad name. If there are bugs in the room, they are responsible. I did not sleep with the door open, so the bugs must have gotten in during the day. Tonite is my last nite here and i would have moved to La Principe (breaking my travel contract), but they were full and my Hotel Royal was pre paid. The hotel said they sprayed the room and there is now sn insect repellant plugged into a socket. For disclosure: I am being paid to visit hotels in Italy to document the experience of a woman traveling alone. They have given me permission to write this critique. Stay away from this hotel. It should be called Royal Ripoff.

Room Tip: If you are temperature or bug sensitive, avoid here.

I think the people made this hotel for us. We wanted to eat in the first night (since it was pouring out) but they were booked out for an 18th birthday party. Since it was my wife's birthday too, they happily plied us with prosecco, free of charge, and then served dinner as room service, complete with free birthday dessert. It was one of the best meals we had on that trip - no, the best.

The bar staff, wait staff, maitre, receptions staff were all charming and helpful.

Highly recommended.
