“Great view, poor value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

The Una Palace Hotel has a good central location, smart, modern décor and a stunning new of Mount Etna from it's roof terrace.

However, we found it bad value. The room was quite small, there was a €20 per person charge to eat breakfast on the roof terrace and overnight car parking was €20. Wi-Fi was chargeable after one hour. I wouldn't expect any of this in a hotel of this standard.

Also after we asked a waiter to reserve a table for us for dinner on the terrace he gave it away while we were sitting having a drink. He then tried to move us to a corner table next the wall which had no view and was uncomfortable. We ended up eating elsewhere.

We stayed here on our recent two day (too short!!!!) sojourn to very underrated Catania. We booked through a special and when we arrived, they gave us the "triple" room because we had a toddler with us and it turned out to be Room 501 which was a railroad style room with a converible sofa, separate room with king bed and bath in the middle. Overall a decent room. Nothing spectacular. First night was fine but very early the following morning we started hearing boom booom booom booom, in a rhythmic music like beat. Really annoying as if there were jackhammering or something. So I'm thinking what is that? I though Etna may be erupting but then I thought, wait---is that the gym? So pop up one floor and voila, the gym, and a huge treadmill is DIRECTLY above our room, more to the point, our bed. I call up the front desk and say listen, I cannot sleep in a room directly under the gym -- as it turned out the gym was evidently either 24 hr or open very early.

In defense of this very fine hotel, they immediately arranged for us a new room, in fact one of the duplex rooms directly facing Via Etnea on the 3rd floor, which I highly recommend. This was a truly fabulous room and I thank the Hotel clerks for acting so swiftly on this for us. it totally made our trip better. Also, they gave us a wonderful recommendation for authentic Sicilian pizza at Il Sale Art Cafe which was truly wonderful. Also, they have a GREAT rooftop lounge/bar/ outdoor area with a DIRECT view of the amazing Mt. Etna.

The location on Etnea is wonderful, directly across the street from a La Rinescente and within walking distance to a cool Roman ruin, the fish market, and the main downtown square. Also near Bellini Gardens and the main shopping district. Cool place.

Room Tip: DO NOT CHOOSE ROOM 501. Get a room overlooking Via Etnea.

Dear Sir,
we would like to thank you for posting your positive review of UNA Hotel Palace and providing feedback of your excellent stay, expressing your personal experience and room preference.

Your opinion really counts for us and it is wonderful to know that you and your family enjoyed our property central location close to the most important city attractions, as well as our Etnea Roof terrace, with stunning view to the baroque city centre and the volcano and definitely our well - designed Suite room, so wide and comfortable, with balcony facing on the main Etnea street.

We were most concerned to learn that during your stay you had an issue with the your previous triple room. We apologise for this sudden and temporary inconvenience that has already been solved, because we discovered close the fitness centre area a new air condition pump for the neighbouring building. At that time, when the origin of your mentioned” boom boom” was not so clear, we preferred immediately changing your room.
We do genuine care about the well-being of all our guests and always do our best to make every stay as enjoyable as possible. Therefore, we are really happy to know that it did not impact on your stay and that your family’s experience was very pleasant, so that you gave us the maximum rate on TripAdvisor considering and suggesting our hotel as a “ cool place”.

It will be our great pleasure to hosting you here again and we hope that you will also have the chance to stay in the other “Made in Italy” UNA Hotels.

Warmest regards,

Rita Monfrini

This hotel is good, and the reason it's good is the quality of its staff. Over our five day stay, they were consistently charming and extremely helpful, starting with the welcoming reception, and extending through the restaurant staff, and the beaming lady who brought our coffee in bed each morning.
The hotel itself is well located, about ten minutes walk down the main street, Via Etnea, to the Piazza Duomo. There are plenty of restaurants nearby -- the Trattoria Don Turrido is simple and clearly a favorite of the locals, and Al Vicolo has the best (and largest) pizzas in town.
The roof terrace is a quiet haven in the evenings, for either a cool drink or a meal (also good). Mount Etna is the view, front and centre.
We chose a Superior room, which is mid-range, and fine. I've read adverse comments about the hard beds, and it's true, although it didn't affect our sleeping. It's really a question of personal taste.
Overall, I'm motivated to write this review (only my second on Tripadvisor) because a good hotel with good staff really needs recognition and encouragement.

Really liked this hotel. Only drawback is only one hour of free WIFI. I would recommend it. It's in downtown area close to many restaurants and cafés. Staff is very helpful and they have underground parking. Happy hour could really be early dinner. The food was wonderful and there was a large assortment

We stayed as a family here for 5 nights last week. We were upgraded to an executive room on check in. It is very well located on the main road within easy walking distance of all the main attractions & bus station/stop. There are lots of restaurants & places to shop nearby. Breakfast was fine, similar food everyday but it was more than enough we thought. You could have sicilian breakfast on the terrace & enjoy lovely views of mount etna for an extra 10 euros, however we chose not to do this, but we did go to the terrace for a drink one evening & it was lovely with beautiful views. We found the staff/service very helpful & friendly. There is a steam room & a gym that are free to use.
We went on an excursion to go up Mount Etna with a company called Sicily Excursions - they were quite helpful & we booked directly with the tour office on via Garibaldi which was walking distance from the hotel. We paid 99 euros each which included a driver/guide who came to pick up from the hotel to the base from which we took the cable car & 4x4 bus. From there we had another guide who took us round the craters. It gets windy at the top so a jumper/raincoat would be very useful as well as a good pair of trainers. We were also taken to some lava caves/tubes as part of the tour & had the opportunity to taste some local honey. Our guide was someone called Marcello Alba (marcelloalba@virgilio.it), he was very friendly, efficient & knowledgeable. We were informed by the local tourist office that most excursions to etna are very similar with very similar prices.
We also went to the beach which is only a 10min bus journey away from the hotel.
The only thing I was not happy about was the wifi. We were told we get 1 hour per stay, however it just wasn't very clear exactly how much we get even after asking. What we realised & what we think is that you can only use 1 hour max at a time & then can log in the next day for up to 1 hour.
Anyway, it was overall a very pleasurable stay.

Amazing view of Mt. Etna. Try and get a room facing Etena Street. The rooftop garden/bar is beautiful with relaxing ambiance. The happy hour spread is very generous! The hotel is situated within walking distance to all major attractions.
