We ended our 8 days in Sicily with 2 nights at the UNA Hotel Palace. We booked their Volcanic Package which gave a number of extra benefits including a tour of Mt Etna. Other benefits included early check-in, late check-out, upgraded room, free wifi, cocktail and canapes free on one night as part of their 'Happy Hour' promo.
We arrived around lunchtime and were glad that we had the early check-in. We got shown straight to our room which looked out onto Via Etnea with a small balcony which if we leaned out we got a great view down to the Duomo and up towards Etna.
We were checked in by Rita, the Guest Relations Manager and she was very helpful throughout our stay - thanks Rita!
Room was a good size with a small minibar and decent bathroom.
We had breakfast at the buffet one morning and then paid for the roof-top brunch on the following day. Both were good and set us up for the day.
Our tour of Etna was a bit of a surprise as we expected to be travelling as part of a group but instead we were met by our guide at reception, shown into his car and then whisked off on our tour of the volcano, volcanic cave and a farm shop selling local honey, oils etc (no hard sell which was nice). We arrived quite early so missed most of the crowds.
The guide was great, spent time answering all our questions about Etna (and Sicily) and gave us lots of good tips. Effectively we got a private tour as part of our hotel package which was great value (although I think you could find you are on a tour for 4 people and be travelling with 2 others which might have been a bit cramped)
The hotel location is great for exploring Catania. The airport bus stops across the road from the hotel (buy tickets at the Tobacconist shop for 1 euro each and validate them on the bus)
On our first night we went up to the roof top bar and enjoyed a complimentary cocktail as part of the room package with free canapes. From around 730pm to 1030pm every evening when you buy a cocktail for 10 euros you can eat a wide variety of canapes and we happily enjoyed a few cocktails and didn't bother going out for dinner! (Good mojitos)
So all in all we had good value stay, central location, friendly service and good food and cocktails with a tour thrown in for good measure. If you are in Catania I would recommend the UNA and don't miss a trip to Etna.
