4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour around this monastery. The tour guide, a young female student kept us all captivated and was very friendly. It was definitely worth the look and the money.

“Most of the interesting rooms were closed.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

The surprising fact was that it is still in use - as a University. Full of students, of course. But none of the interesting rooms listed in the guide book were open for viewing. Perhaps we should have bought the guided tour.

“Spared from lava flow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2013

y husband and I visited here in September 2013. We went before the students started university so it was deserted apart from our small group being given a tour by our excellent guide. The whole experience was amazing, from the integration of a very old monastery into a university but also the site of a rediscovered roman mosaic paved road at the foundations which has been conserved with glass walk ways above it. The kitchens also down below have been preserved and next to them you can see the remains of the lava flow which just stopped short of covering the monastery. Upstairs the music room which is modern but which has been carefully blended into the fabric of the building and best of all the magnificent staircase which has white marble sculptures of new testament scenes. Do not miss this if you are visited Catania.

“Sicilian baroque”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

The building is an example of Sicilian late baroque style, but other architectural styles were integrated. It is a part of UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002. The history of the building begins in 1558. I like the Church of San Nicolo L'Arena and the Chiostro di Ponente most. Surely, it should be visited by all the tourists who go to Catania.

“Very interesting building, but couldn't access gardens”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

We went to the Monastery - which forms part of a university. There is a basic written guide in English but no English speaking guides which was a shame. We walked round the building which was rather beautiful - but it was milling with students - and we felt that we probably missed a lot because we didn't understand what we were seeing or what we were supposed to be seeing. We spent about 30 mins here
