“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2014

We stayed here for just one night and it was certainly good value and a nice location. When you first arrive, it doesn't feel too welcoming, an intercom then through huge grey doors into a courtyard. Next, up two flights of stairs (no lift) but then you go inside and it's bright and quirky. All good after that, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable room, decent breakfast for the price. We only had a few hours to explore Palermo but the hotel was in walking distance of the major sites so that was good. On checkout my bag was carried down for me which was much appreciated. We had planned to get the bus to the airport and this was one of the reasons why we chose this hotel because the bus stops quite close by. However, it was a Sunday and we hadn't checked the bus times in advance so after waiting 20 minutes, we decided we'd better get a taxi. Back to the hotel intercom, a short conversation with the staff, 2 minutes later a taxi pulled up. Fantastic service and only 23 euros which we felt was pretty reasonable.

If you are a first time visitor to Sicily and speak little or no English, this is the perfect hotel.
Marco, the owner, made our trip a great success by taking us wherever we wanted to go and telling us the history of the many ancient sites along the way. From giant Greek theatres to volcanos to ocean side restaurants, his guidance and advice were invaluable.
Thank you, Marco!

We stayed 3 nights in Catania and had a great experience there. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff is gracious, helpful and accomodating. They all spoke good English. The hotel is centrally located and is within walking distance to the major sites in Catania. Marco was a fabulous host., funny, intelligent and informative.

So far, in Catania have I stayed at around six different hotels. I find Hotel Etnea 316 to be best of all of them in the class of medium-price hotels. Among many other reasons, that was due to the kindly and helpful personnel. Moreover, it was the first hotel in which it was really easy to communicate in English with each personnel member. I liked also the fact that the Wi-Fi signal usually reached my room even though it was supposed to work in the lobby only. I stayed in a room from the backyard which is why I was able to sleep very well.

Room Tip: Rooms from the backyard are quiet. You may ask for them if you stay for more than a few days. It'...

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Hotel Etnea 316. Marco and Gaetano couldn't have been more helpful, even arranging for a lovely cake to be waiting there for my boyfriend's birthday. It made it so special. We went on a tour of Mt Etna with Marco for a great price. Marco really knows his stuff and is full of useful information, I would highly recommend it. Thanks Marco and Gaetano for a wonderful holiday!

My wife and I spent three nights at the hotel at the end of April. We had asked for a quiet room as we had read the reviews about noise. Our room was at the side of the hotel but was very noisey, sleep was difficault fo us both. The staff were lovely, the position on Via Etnea was super so easy to explore Catania.

Room Tip: Ask for a rear room

The hotel itself is nice and comfy but there is no elevator so beware. The rooms were very basic but we weren't really expecting the ritz Carlton. They were big though. They only have 1 pillow per bed. We requested extra ones which they addressed immediately but we weren't told that we would be charged for the extra pillows.

About Marco the owner, he is great and is obviously passionate about what he does. He gave us a tour of Mt Etna and Taormina for a great price. He was very knowledgeable about Etna but for Taormina he just dropped us off and let us wander ourselves (which maybe explains why it was cheaper). The next day he was doing another tour of Siracusa and asked if we wanted to join, my mother had booked another tour company for The Godfather though. He became almost petulant, when our other guide rang the bell to ask him to let us know he was downstairs he apparently was very rude and argued with our other guide. and while Marco was helpful getting our bags up (no elevator) when we checked in, when we checked out he told one of my companions that the 'taxi driver' should go get it instead (although he knew we arranged a transfer with the other tour guide) I understand it's a competitors thing but it seemed very unprofessional.

These were just our observations. It may not be bothersome for other guests but for those who want to just be at a hotel and not be bothered by the staff, this place may not be for you as Marco's zeal and eagerness to please can go over edge sometimes since we felt pressured to give him our business. It was almost like he wanted us to only take his suggestions.

Also my mom didn't think he was a very safe driver during our tour, he was always taking his eyes off the road.
