We stayed in Taormina and got the 9.15am bus from the terminal (destination: Francavilla). We didn't pay the entrance fee of 8EUR, but went via the free route. A few people have commented that there's not much to see if you don't pay. This is true if you just walk down the steps to the water and don't go any further. However we braved the water (it is very cold, so prolonged contact is not recommended unless you are wearing waders) and walked across to the other side. It is pebbly, so rubber flip flops are recommended. Once you've crossed over, you can carry on walking, following the flow of the water. It's quite rocky, but there are some beautiful spots. None of the other tourists who were there at the same time as us followed - so it was very peaceful. Definitely recommended if you're feeling a bit adventurous, but do be careful when walking as it is pretty isolated. We had brought a few snacks with us, so it was nice to pick a spot, sit down in the sun for a while and take it all in. There's not much else do to apart from that, so we were ready to get the bus back at 12.30pm - perfect half day trip.
