We returned to Alghero in May/June this year and decided to stay at the Catalunya Hotel for its proximity to the old town, the harbour and, of course, for its wonderful Sky Bar. We comprised a party of six - three couples - and requested rooms close to one another which we were given. However as our room had a leak and reeked of damp we had to be moved to another floor. It was a little irritating when one member of staff (I didn't get his name) insisted we should pay more as this was a bigger room with an extra single bed. As it was the only vacant room left in the hotel and the room supplied was unfit for habitation we naturally argued our case. In general though, staff at reception were friendly and helpful.
The decor in the room was not to my taste and the bathroom was decidedly dated. Having said this however, it was spotlessly clean and adequate. The lobby of the hotel is bright and airy but not conducive to people gathering to chat or to make arrangments - a lot of empty space with little seating. The seating that is provided is very modern and somehow incongruous with the building.
The breakfast buffet was very very poor with little choice. There was fresh fruit in the form of an apple or an orange but no fresh fruit 'cocktail' which a few in our party would have liked. In general there was a lack of attention to detail such as serving what I believed to be orange squash rather than fresh orange juice. The best part of the breakfast was that it was served in the Sky Bar with its wonderful views.
The Sky Bar closes at 11 o'clock each night which was disappointing as it would have been nice to return from our night out to a late night cocktail and a beautiful view. Although it is outdoors it's a bit of a moveable feast as to whether or not it allows smoking - some people were allowed and others were not - I guess it depended on whether the staff knew them. Those not in the know were sent to another large terrace on the other side of the building which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. It had two very old plastic chairs and a bockety table on which stood one small, overflowing ashtray. The shame was that this terrace could also have been made beautiful although it did overlook a prison yard.
As we were only staying for three nights our biggest disappointment was that the Sky Bar was off limits for one of these as they had a wedding party booked. Bear in mind that this is the only bar in the hotel.
I found the Catalunya to be expensive for what was on offer and if I were to stay again it would simply be for the location. If, however, another hotel was to open in the same area I would stay there and visit the Sky Bar for drinks.
