“Beautiful setting; could be fantastic but it is not”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

The loction of this hotel is really beautiful, next to a protected natural park, but the hotel is far too expensive for what it is. Total lack of service (no pool service, no spa!!!), staff almost rude (although it was the end of peak season). I won't repeat what other travellers have alrealdy pointed out. Would like to stress that breakfast is bas: no proper bread, no proper juices...
Pity because this hotel could be a gem with the proper management and refurbishment.
Location is not a problem but you need a car (it is easy to rent a car and drive around).

“Could be so much better.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

The location of this place is stunning, but the hotel itself could be so much better. Maybe it was because we visited at the end of the peak season, but the staff were very rude and unhelpful. Upon checkin my friend and I were given absolutely no information about what the hotel had to offer, and did not even know where breakfast was or from what time. Whenever we approached the desk to ask advice or querstions, we were made to feel like we were interrupting the front desk staff from something more important. We couldn't seem to find any information regarding things to do in the area, and the hotel information provided in the rooms did not offer much. Can't believe there was no wifi in the rooms!!

The drinks were quite expensive however the barman was nice. Was disappointed that there were no real food offerings during the day, like a snack menu or something. The pool area and sun loungers are great but there were a lot of wasps unfortunately, and insect repellant is a definite must.

The breakfast was nice, although for a 4 star place it was disappointing that you had to pay additional for poached eggs, especially as all that was offer were cold hard boiled eggs or scrambled eggs laden with cream.

Would definitely recommend getting a car - we visited a great pizzeria in nearby fertilia, where pizzas are around 5-8 euros - brilliant value. Getting a car also means you can explore some of the beaches up the coast which are out of this world.

Room Tip: I booked a garden view room which was good value - it also still afforded a sea view which was great...

“Good, but could be really good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

First off we have to say that the hotel has a superb position on a promontory and fair weather or foul, the rooms look out onto an impressive sea view. The sounds of the sea are fantastic. However this hotel, which is great, could try a little harder and be fantastic. We had an executive room, the third category up, and were surprised to only have wifi access in the reception area. We had plastic throw away cups for drinking, that's a bit cheap and not environmentally sound. Our double bed was 2 singles, not uncommon but apparently there is no alternative at the hotel. The restaurant was fantastic but only offered a 3 course set menu. Not everyone wants to or can eat this much every night and with only one other restaurant in town, more choice would have been very welcome. The staff didn't see very present or attentive, there were towels left out on loungers over night in high wind. Obviously this was not a problem for us but shows that perhaps they weren't around enough or lacked passion. Also with so much to do in the area more information at reception would have been good. This is all meant as constructive feedback, we had a great time and a very comfortable stay and would recommend the hotel to others.

“Perfect rustic, romantic retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

My husband and I stayed at El Faro from 21st to 24th September. We wanted to escape the kids and enjoy a peaceful stay in the sunshine in a room overlooking the sea. Our room, an exec sea view was perfect with the most incredible view.

The room was clean, not ultra luxurious but perfect for what we needed, the bathroom a good size with two sinks. The bar area is very contemporary and the outside space for eating is great for evening drinks or breakfast. Breakfast is generous, delicious and can be taken inside or outside. Lunch is limited to either very formal 4 course or a toasted sandwich - something in-between such as a salad would be idea. We didn't eat at the hotel in the evening but instead walked 500 yards down the road to Embarcadero where we ate lunch and dinner every day for 3 days - amazing seafood, pizza and pasta.

At El Faro make sure you take out the little speed boat, perfect for exploring the coast privately.

In summary a gorgeous stay and we will definitely return - but do understand that it is a simple hotel, right on the water and that is its draw. For a true getaway you cannot beat the sun loungers spread across the rocks and with the most incredible view.

“Overall good but some bad points”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

Stayed for one week in mid-September. Very short taxi from airport - 27euro. Stunning coastal/bay location with beautiful views over Porto Conte. Hotel very clean and modern. Peaceful and secluded environment focused on individuals, couples and adult groups. Hotel is spacious and assured of privacy even when by the pool or in the bar. Hotel is in the Regional Park and offers good forest coastal looped walks so has something for outdoor/wildlife types who want to escape the escapism. The main negative is that due to its isolation the hotel's prices for drinks and food courses are over-priced and not balanced. The set menu 4 course dinner is 32euro, however if you want just a main special it would cost 20euro and would be a small portion. 6euro for a beer!! The standard of food was also inconsistent, one night we had the set menu and was excellent, the next we had something off the a la carte and it was dreadful. Breakfast was very good. Other negatives may be superficial and probably just personal opinion, however, the female reception staff are unwelcoming and unhelpful. The female waitress was great, however the waiters were a bit disorganised (you had to ask for everything, butter, wine list, there was no intuition). There is a wee pizzeria in a nice setting and much better value 5min walk called Embarcadero as an alternative option. Also bus into Alghero is frequent from outside hotel.

Room Tip: Paying extra for seaview or executive room well worth it.
