We arrived at Alghero after a bit of a hassle with the payments. Essentially, the place we booked it through sent payment, but the resort never collected it. I contacted them and was told that the time they had to accept the payment had passed, so I would have to EMAIL them my payment details - like I was going to do that! In the end, 7 months later they took payment randomly which confused us - few emails back and forth and all was sorted out for our visit last month (but could have done without the stress or international calls!).
Anyway, when we arrived we instantly thought WOW as we drove up the dirt track... until we saw the horses in the fields (directly adjoining the hotel). These horses were terribly thin, bordering on emaciated (we've kept horses for 10 years, so don't say this lightly) - it was very upsetting and put us off any horse riding trips. Other guests also commented on this to us and were upset also.
Anyway, as I said the hotel itself is beautifully located and clean. A complete change from our Olbia hotel! The room was light and had a great view of the mountains and pool. However, the food was a tad overpriced and small portions. My wife ordered the sea bass for approx 15 euros and it came with JUST a small fish and nothing else - no garnish. Also, the room was directly above the kitchen so we could hear the 'tenderising' of the food!
We arranged to go on a boat trip the following day, which was arranged for 3pm - the trip was to include transport to the harbour and back, as it was the owner who owned the boat. We got back from seeing the "Neptunes Grotto" at about 1pm, and decided to relax a bit - only to receive a call asking us where we were as they are heading off now! This was at 1:45pm - NOT 3pm. We quickly got ready and went out only to be told the car was full and we'd have to follow them in our hire car - good job I hadn't had a drink at lunch time and we DID have a car!
Anyway, the boat trip was really nice and relaxing and we had a great time. The captain was charming and friendly and provided on-board snacks and chilled wine, which was much needed as we didn't have a chance to get any refreshments on the way! When we returned to the hotel, they did charge us 20 euros less - no explanation why - but we didn't argue.
I know it sounds like we are having a moan - some of it is justified and can be worked on. All the staff spoke English very well and were helpful - just need to sort those horses out and fix a few things to round it off and make it better ie there was a pool bar, but no one manning it - with meals, they need to include garnish. If someone orders a mixed grilled fish platter, don't give them just a small sea bass and nothing else! The bread basket stopped my wife from passing out from lack of food! :)
All in all, it is a beautiful hotel in a lovely location - just needs a bit of extra care around the hospitality side of it.
