Costa Smerelda is gorgeous, amazing beaches. Lovely landscape, rocky, dry and stunning. No more than 3 stories can be built, so everything is gorgeous.

for beach, go to Liscia Ruja on the road back toward Olbia just out of P Cervo - the sign says "Golf" in brown, on the left, take it then a right down a dirt road, where a small sign points to the beach. its a long dusty road, but its amazing. sun beds 7 euros each for day, but beware - 2 tuna salads, 2 ham and cheese toasties, 1 cappucino, 2 beers cost us 56 pounds!

the costa is incredibly expensive, so stock up at local supermarket sunless you like spending up to 200 pounds a day on lunch / dinner / drinks (pound was 1.12 when we went to euro)

- hire a car - most important.

- our villa was found on a villa site, in area up a hill about 3 mins drive from harbour called Pantogia for 1000 euros for 10 days, then extra 200 euros for electricity use then another 90 euros for cleaning. 3 bed, 2 bath, no pool very average and live wiring everywhere! hence lights kept blowing - but it was cheap in comparison to others starting around 1450.

dante restaurant was nice, just out of porto on main road - pizza, etc, not too expensive and the nicest food.

beware of donkey and horse on menus for meat, and high priced everything!

porto rotondo - pretty harbour port ... we went to a place called La Rette on the harbour walk, had no one in it so we sat down, and chatted, as you do - and he ended up charging for 3 bottles of sparkling wine and 3 basic tapas style plates of food (he kept bringing out, unasked) £165. no wonder when we walked back past 20 mins later he was closed for the day ....

stunning place, enjoy all the lovely nature, which costs nothing :)

there is nothing to justify the extremely high prices in Sardinia. It's a definate no go. Mallorca is 10 better and if you want more exclusive holidays go to myconos Crete French riviera or wherever else!

The food is average, people unfriendly and xenohobic. This is not a place of international turism, none speaks English to an extend of idiocity, you ask them where is the beach bar and they look at you with eyes wide open, as if they've never heard the word beach bar before. Not to mention the trouble you'll be if you get sick or you need to communicate something more complex.

Sardinia is an average irland, overpriced, and is intented only for Italians it seems, we stayed for two weeks and we didn't see a single foreigner, that must say something.

Probably the worst value for money ever

since the advent of budget flights we have now been to sardinia twice first to alghero ont the west then this june spent two weeks on the east coast having flown into olbia.
people are genuinely friendly and helpful it is less commercial than mainland italy and the people are nicer or perhaps just more laid back than mainland italians.
the place is relatively unspoilt without the high rise horrors of spain etc and all a little bit backward which is charming.
lots of swiss and germans go on walking and camping holidays cyclists and motorcyclists also seem to love the place.
roads are good and great fun to drive on if you like the twisty mountainous type alternatively use the motorway which runs right down the island where it seems you can go as fast as you like and they do!...never saw one traffic cop.
lots of good food and traditional sardinian wines and cheeses etc plus great bread.........deserted beaches (in june) little coves abound but I am told avoid july and august when the italians arrive in hords. if you want to try somewhere a little diferent go for it and alghero is a nice place to go for a short break with a nice old town and plenty of restaurants etc but we did prefer thequieter east coast and hour south of olbia is a nice area.

This island is one of the best kept secrets. I went there for 2 weeks in Sept. and had a wonderful time. We went from Calgiari to Alghero to Costa Smerald. In each area there is much to see.

We have just spent 2 weeks from 7th to 13th October in Sardinia. The weather was perfect sunshine every day and temperature in the 70's. As the holiday season had finished lots of the attractions were closed and choice of hotels was limited but this did not detract from the holiday as roads were empty and there were no crowds when visiting towns and villages to see true Sardinia.
We spent time in Costa Smeralda. Oliena in the mountains and finally in the south 15 mins drive out of Caglieri. It is impossible to choose our favourite, all the coastal drives were spectacular and led us to beautiful sandy beaches and clear water. The Su Golgone Hotel at the bottom of the Sopromonte mountains near Oliena was our favourite hotel and lived upto it's reputation as one of the best 5 hotels on the island. This hotel should be on anyones itineray who is travelling around Sardinia. We will definitely return as the people were so friendy especially in the villages and would suggest the best times to go would be May or September.
