“Romantic and Historical”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

We recently stayed in the Hotel Akropolis one night and wish we had stayed longer! It is located in the oldest part of Taranto that was an important port of Magna Grecia. The owner of the hotel was very friendly and knowledgeable and gave us a tour of the layers of history that were uncovered during the hotel’s restoration. Many of the buildings around the hotel are abandoned or under restoration but the area is very safe and much more interesting than more manicured and touristy areas we’ve encountered in Italy. The area is on the cusp of revitalization and the buildings still hold their air of romance and former grandeur.

There is a terrace restaurant on the top floor with a 360 degree view of the historic center. There is also an excellent restaurant on one of the middle floors. Our room was pristine and tastefully decorated with a very comfortable bed and beautiful mosaic floors. We had one of our best night’s sleeps in Italy due to the lack of street noise. The breakfast included organic fruit – a rarity in Italian hotels. We needed assistance in locating a rental car and the receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful. We visited Taranto’s main sites (the exceptional archaeological museum and castle within easy walking distance) but the streets around the hotel were even more interesting to us. The locals we encountered on the streets were very friendly and pointed us in the direction of interesting buildings. We would definitely stay at the Akropolis again!

We stumbled upon this hotel relatively late in the evening and we hoped they had room as we had no reservations.

The staff member who helped us (a young woman whose name escapes me) was incredibly helpful and welcoming. She helped us park our car, which was no easy feat in the historic centre of Taranto. The next day, she moved it out of the garage for us as well, which was truly skilful manoeuvring.

The historic centre of Taranto is a wonder. We wished we had stayed longer. The hotel is charming, old world, central and has a splendid roof terrace restaurant/bar that overlooks the whole of the city. We had dinner there and it was good. The room was clean and comfortable.

Taranto is a very nice town with a nice old centre in need of restoration.
The Hotel is an exception as it is nicely restored, with perfectly equipped rooms with all amenities and top security. It is an old Palazzo and while excavating the two story cellar old remains of the greek and roman times have been found.
The hotel has its own restaurant and its roof terrace on the fifth floor offers views over the whole town. There is the possibility to park your car in the Hotel Garage.
The Service is excellent and very friendly.

Room Tip: The rooms on the front have a balcony

We've stayed only one night, but should have been more.
The staff is extra friendly, the restaurant on top is delightful and very tasty. The view from the bar is real a 360, both the "small" and "big" seas are there, just an armlength from the Cathedral's dome. Wonderful with a cocktail :-)
It has a very nice restaurant in the cellar as well, so I assume this is a good place to visit even in winter time.
The room was large enough and comfortable, bathroom was clean and spacy.
The neighbourhood is indeed slighltly "interesting", but there are several things to see around during the daytime; in the evening you have the restaurant on top of the stairs anyway :-)
Oh, and when your GPS says at a very narrow street to turn right, be brave and do it. There is a little square there and the garage of the hotel is right there, 10 meters from the hotel's door.

We were a bit worried as we arrived in Taranto as all the buildings were very run down and old. When we found the hotel we were happily surpised. It was a beautiful small hotel with only a few rooms. Across the bridge is new Taranto which is very nice and the old part does have some charm with the locals around.
The manager is so lovely and helpful. He directed us around town and even kept our SLR camera when we left it there by mistake!!
The rooms are very pretty and have little balconies.
The breakfast is very basic but otherwise it is a great hotel and I would definately go back.

This hotel is a wonderful oasis in the "old historic area" of Taranto. The hotel has been supberbly restored and you have a sense of the ancient origins that lie beneath the modern touches. All the rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean. We had a glorious dinner in the open air restaurant and all the courses were absolutely delicious. Walking around the area during the day was not a problem but it would be better to be walking in a group in the evening. The cocktail bar has a superb view and it was a pleasure to enjoy a drink and watch the sunset. The overall service was good and the staff were all very friendly. The owner spoke English and was a wonderful host.

It is a shame to write a negative review of this hotel, just because the people were so nice to us! But, it is what it is.

First of all, if you are a woman traveling alone, this is not a place for you. The area is not good, full of unoccupied buildings and during our walk to the nearest bar to get sandwiches (no room service until the evening) we had to walk past a bunch of pretty weird guys (sorry guys). The local person who was attending us even told us that the hotel was not in a nice area.

It's about 20-30 minute walk to the center of town for any restaurants, or simply to walk around.

The view was nice over the water, but that, along with the people being nice, is pretty much the only thing that this hotel has going on. Yes it was clean, but old, and cold. (we were there in January - freezing - our thermometer was at 64 degrees in the room for the first ca. 6 hours.

Breakfast was surprisingly bad: no fresh bread, just stuff that would not go bad if no-one would eat there for weeks. You know, toast in plastic wrappers, jelly, cereal. For a 4 star hotel (supposedly) it is amazing that there were no eggs, no fresh bread, no fruit, no yogurt... you're getting the picture.

Again, nicest people, but go elsewhere. This is absolutely not a 4 star hotel - by far.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere.
