We stayed for a week at the Masseria Salaminain Puglia. The place is lovely, quietly located out of town.
The swimming pool area is simply stunning. The weather is very hot, so sitting by the pool does constitute a lot of the holiday. Take plenty of books: Puglia is quiet.
Our room was clean, cool, and air conditioned, but rather simply furnished. The bed was comfortable. The building itself is really attractive.
We are vegetarians, and we were treated very well by the family who run Salamina. Apart from basic pizza and pasta, most Italians are stumped by vegetarians at the traditional Italian 4 course meal. But Salamina rose to the challenge. Starters were always imaginative an usually based on grilled or cooked vegetables. The pasta which always followed was rich and filling. The meals are simply enormous; the wine is cheap and drinkable. By the third day we cried for mercy and cut back to 3 courses. Unless it is windy, meals are taken in a lovely old courtyard.
Most of the other guests were couples with small children, but we came without our teenage children and didn't feel at all out of place. The masseria is a family business and very child-friendly. The sea can be seen from masseria but it is a drive away and rocky, so not very suitable for swimming.
We went out on a couple of days when it clouded over. We enjoyed looking over the archaelogical site near Monopoli, and the caves at Castellana were an unexpected pleasure. (The English-speaking tour is worth waiting for.) Everyone visits the trulli at Arabellobella but beware the hard sell at every door. Every single one is now a souvenir trap.
The masseria is beautiful, the swimming pool is lovely and the meals are good. There's not much to do in the evening, but the evening meal is an event in itself.
