“A real taste of Bari Vecchia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

We have just got back from a four week stay in Puglia with a total of sixteen nights staying in this B&B. Gianni, the very friendly owner met us at the airport and throughout our stay was always there and ready to help should we need it.

The building itself is full of character and is located in a lovely quiet area of the old town but easily walkable to all other parts, no only of the old town but also the main areas of the new town.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and the odd scooter or locals talking outside (as commented by another reviewer) just adds to the atmosphere, even though the windows/doors were very efficient at keeping the room almost silent!

A great place to stay if you want a 'real taste of the old town'

Room Tip: Stay in the suite if you can-

This is the first time I have been burned by using Trip Advisor. Sure, I may have differing opinions about better and best, but I've never had a terrible reaction to a hotel that gets very good ratings on here. This hotel is simply terrible, and if it were not for its location in the historic old town it would get the dreaded one oval.

Our room was dark, dirty, and poorly furnished. There was no water provided and no glasses to obtain water from the sink. The refrigerator had old food and open drinks in it and the shower had used soap in it. The bed had a stain on the sheets which I covered with a hand towel to sleep. I admit that I am spoiled when it comes to hotels but I did not realize I was booking into a Days Inn or "rent by the hour" type of place when I decided to stay here.

The man who either owns the hotel or runs the hotel was nice enough to meet us where the cab let us off and walk us to the room, but he gave no information regarding the room, the hotel or the surrounding neighborhood. He simply collected cash for the payment and left. I had to have the taxi driver call him to even find the place, as it is inaccessible by car.

The "breakfast" consisted of stale rolls and (thankfully) a banana. That was the extent of my knowledge of the F and B program at this hotel (if there is one?).

There may be no nice places in Bari, but there have to at least be hotels that are clean and accessible somewhere. If this is the best B and B in Bari then some enterprising Italian could make a fortune.

Bari taxi drivers are unfamiliar with the historic district, as they don't drive there. We were dropped off at the opposite end of the historic area and walked quite a long way with our luggage. No one was at the B and B when we arrived. We never met Gianni, a woman showed us the room and left. No number was given us in the event of a problem. She emphasized that we be out by 10: am.

The pros: yes, it is in the historic district, the AC worked, it was clean and recently renovated. The cons: tiny room just wide enough for a double bed, on a corner. Motorscooters coming and going at night, noise from groups of people on the street, car radios. Bathroom has a tiny square screened window letting noise in. No hair dryer, tiny round of soap, no place to put anything in the shower. One croissant and coffee at a cafe for breakfast. No host on site, no number given us in the event of a problem.
This was the fourth B and B we stayed in in Italy. All were the same price or less than this one. The others were outstanding, large windowed rooms, toiletries, helpful hosts, homemade breakfasts. One was in the historic district of Lecce, one was just outside the historic district of Bari. In one in Belgium for 10 euros less, a lovely apt near Brussels' Grand Place. No comparison. Do NOT recommend!

A wonderful little B&B with great character. Near S. Nicholas Basilica, its a great location for someone who wants the authentic experience of the old charm. Walking distance to all sights.

European style breakfast with lovely croissants and fruits. A bit noisy as its in the old town but its part of the experience.

We did book a suite and landed up getting a small room instead so in the end we overpaid. Though, I guess didnt make a big difference in the end. But do call or email the owner to make sure you have the room you want.

Gianni the owner is also a really lovely man and went out of his way to give us a lift to the station which was really convenient and was available whenever we needed any help.

They do not speak English so keep if you are not Italian, keep a phrase book handy.

Very nice hotel. Amazing location in the old city next to basilica San Nikolai (150 m) and to the walking seaside street.
Room was very nice, clean, with comfortable bed. Breakfast (cafe and croissant) served in the room.
Gianni, the owner, was very pleasant to meet us at the train station (his own initiative).
Recommend to stay!

Santa Maria del Buon Consiglio is exactly the type of B&B we love to stay in when in Italy! We look for places where the owner is given special mention and Gianni, for his B&B, deserves a lot of mention for his work! We asked for a pick up at the airport and Gianni himself was there at the airport (it was 23:30 at night). From the first minute it felt that we were visiting an old friend. Every morning he would bring us a hot (and very very good) capuccino and cornetti from a nearby bar directly to our room at a pre-arraged time. One can request a different breakfast also if italian breakfast is not preferred. Every day we found a new bottle of drinking water in the room and on a particular day we also found a bowl of fruit. He also offered to give us a lift to the train station on the days when we travelled out to nearby places (Bari is very well connected by train to Polignano a Mare and Alberobello). From first contact by email to the final trip to the airport (yes, unfortunately we had to leave) Gianni always made himself available, answering emails and smss within minutes. The building itself is very well designed and furnished. We had a conversation with Gianni about future plans he has for the B&B with some new rooms and improvements and it seems the place could get even better! Bari and its surrounding cities were wonderful and we hope to return soon, definitely at the same B&B!

Room Tip: The suite is not only the best room in the B&B, but probably the nicest room in Bari!
