After reading other reviews here, we were excited by the prospect of authentic local food, good atmosphere, and great value. We were not disappointed.
It takes a little work to find this place, but there's a sign just past the Red Cross in Piazza Mercantile that helps mark the way.
We arrived a little before 20:00 and were the first people at the restaurant. The waiters both spoke passable English, which we were thrilled about, given our other experiences in Bari and our un-passable Italian. They were prompt to greet us, seat us, and take our wine order.
With almost no Italian (and not having access to an English menu) we were a little lost. The waiter asked (in English) what our dietary restrictions and preferences were, and ordered for us - one bottle of wine, one appetizer, and two larger plates. We finished by splitting a dessert - delicious pistachio ice cream.
It was a perfect amount of food, but more than that, each dish was exquisitely executed. The flavors were subtle but varied, and we feel like we got better exposure to local cuisine than we could have done if we'd picked our own dishes. Plus we're in love with the wine - just wish we could remember what it was called!
Since we arrived well in advance of typical summer Italian mealtime we had no problem getting a table without reservations, but we noticed that between 21:15 and 21:30 the place filled up, and people started having to wait for space. We'd recommend showing up at 21:00 or earlier if you want to be seated promptly.
We've eaten a few other places in Bari and feel like this was the best authentic experience, and also a great value. We highly recommend you visit.
