We have just got back from Bella Italia. We took our own tent and were very much in the minority. The site is dominated by caravans, mobile homes and EuroCamp-style fixed tents. The area where they direct people to pitch their own tents too is a very tiny corner of the campsite where not a lot of grass grows due to the shade from the trees, so it can get a bit muddy very quickly, and the pitches are the smallest ones on the site from what I saw. Luckily for us we made the best of it by taking the pitch right at the edge of the site, overlooking the lake, so the views were definitely compensation. Also on the plus side, we were surrounded by trees and bay leaf bushes on most sides, unlike most of the other caravan pitches where trees were in short supply. The caravan/Eurocamp pitches also appeared fairly small for a 4* campsite, and were packed together very closely. However, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the restaurant next to the lake was good, the supermarket had everything we needed and more including fresh baked bread etc every day. The toilet block was spotlessly clean, modern, and spacious and included private cubicles with washbasins.
The showers were fantastic- when they worked properly! Unfortunately the supply of hot water (supposedly 24h/day) was sporadic. It was inexplicable too as sometimes I would be the only person taking a shower but the hot water would suddenly cut out, but if I went to another shower next door it would be fine for about 10 minutes. I don't think I ever got a shower to keep running with hot water for more than 10 minutes at a time! However my boyfriend had no problems whatsoever with water running cold in the men's showers. It would be great if they could sort the problem out.
The other facilities were superb, including bicycle hire. We rented a bike each for 6 hours which cost about £6/hour - pretty good. Of course there was also archery, pedalos, windsurfing etc and it seemed like all the kids were kept entertained with shows every day. The swimming pools were great too, and there was a beach section next to them with real sand where you can hire sun loungers.
I wouldn't particularly recommend this place for teenagers because there wasn't a disco and it generally seemed like it was more set up for parents with young children.
One more thing, at 15.50 euros per person just for a tent in low season (22E high season) this is one of the most expensive campsites in Italy, according to camping guides. I just think given the landscaping/pitches/showers they should probably lower the prices or improve the layout as I have stayed in nicer 4* camp sites for less. However, the location on the lake is great, the nearby town is pretty and the activities, food and most of the facilities are good which is probably how it gets the rating it gets.
