I have to say I wasn't really excited about staying at this hotel because the rates at the time were not the most competitive, one would say. For the price of two nights I could easily have stayed for three nights at another hotel but I was backpacking and deciding where to go the day before I left my previous destination, so these higher costs were part of my reality.
I made the reservation and made sure I called to let the owner know at what time I'd be arriving. He doesn't speak english so if you're not skilled in italian, a translated email should suffice. The reception desk is open only a few hours a day and it seems like the owner runs the b&b by himself.
The room was absolutely HUGE! There was this magnificent bed, a sofa, a couch and a simple old TV. Now I don't care about hotel TVs and I don't make a fuzz if they're not good. It was a TV and I didn't turn it on. There was also other furniture in the bedroom to put your clothes in and organize your objects. Truly great, I recommed this b&b.
The bathroom is big too and the heating there is very good, unlike the heating in the bedroom which wasn't the best. It seemed like the heating device they had was a bit old and it took a while to get to a pleasant temperature in the room. The room is extremely comfortable, though.. It even had this small balcony with a view to neighbouring buildings.
The breakfast was quite simple actually. I expected more, but it always left me satisfied and filled, ready to start the day. There was everything one would normally find at a breakfast, but you could see at the details that it wasn't a superb one.
What I can say is that I'm a simple man and if they have orange juice (ice cold), some bread with butter and fresh fruits, I'm fine. Really, I don't nag about this and I pointed this out for those of you who prefer a more complete breakfast. Make sure you're aware of this.
Now, location. It is really close to the railway station. I walked from there to the hotel (with my huge backpack), so did my girlfriend (with the huge backpack too). This goes to show that the distance is fair, because if it weren't we would have taken a cab.
From the hotel to the tourist locations it's a simple straight walk with a couple of turns here and there. In 15 minutes you're at the Arena and it won't take more than 20 minutes walking to get back to the hotel from anywhere in Downtown. Location is superb and I couldn't ask for more.
The place was silent, very quiet, clean and the owner was quite friendly.
I don't recommend this to solo travelers because it seems like a bit too much if I were traveling alone. I'd try to find fair lodging closer to the Arena. But if you need the space and the huge bed for whatever piece of business you have to take care of, I can say by experience that this b&b does the job and provides the amenities and atmosphere you are looking for.
It's classic, simple, no frills, just a traditional italian bed and breakfast with an owner who doesn't speak english. How better can it get?
I was very satisfied and the higher rates didn't end up being a waste of money.
I traveled in February 2012, as a couple.
