My niece and I got opera tickets for La Traviata. We were told to bring cushions to sit on since the hard stone seats are not so comfortable and are super hot from being in the sun all day. You can actually buy the little cushions at the entrance for a reasonable (well, for tourist standard) price.
Once in the arena, you are overwhelmed by its size.
We were sitting quite far and high up, but I don't think it matters really where you sit, you get the same experience.
It was quite funny that the people around us (lots of locals) brought their own picnic, and soon enough we were sharing grapes and sandwiches with our neighbours.
You also had the beer, wine and ice cream man selling their products, like at a football game.
It can get quite warm, we actually saw one elderly lady faint (paramedics came quickly).
If you have cheap seats, you don't need to dress up, but of course we did..it just felt like the fun thing to do.
The opera itself was superbe, even for the less interested...you just have to appreciate the music and everything that goes into the production.
I would definitely do this again.
