We have been to Italy many times and usually rent a villa or an apartment. My wife loves to cook, especially with Italian ingredients and we get tired of eating every meal out. So we booked the Giuletta Suite almost a year ago, based on the accommodations of a living room ,kitchenette with table and balcony, great recommendations and it's location.
When we arrived and were shown our room,(not a suite) we said there must be a mistake, because the room was very small, had no kitchen or sitting area. Maria the woman in charge called the owner and handed the phone to my wife. He begins to tell her that he renovated the place two months ago and is now charging more and we should be happy we got it so cheap, besides he tells her that nobody rents so far in advance. Since the owner was working, I then decided to wait for him and was told he would be back in about an hour. He did not show within the hour and his wife gave us a bottle of wine and said we will work things out.It was not until the next day that I finally spoke,to him but again he told me about the renovation and the new price for the room and that he had made a mistake. We had also confirmed the reservation two weeks prior to arrival and no mention was made of the renovation. I told him that his problem was not my problem and since he cut the room we had rented half, I was only going to pay half of the nightly rate. He was annoyed but finally accepted my demand. However, it still denied us the experience that my wife and I were looking forward to and had invested so much of our time to plan.
The room itself was small, very dark and two of the lights had burnt out bulbs. The balcony was our only place to sit (thankfully it did not rain) and very tight. You had to move the chairs and table in order to close the door shutters. Since the street is very noisy, we were going to close the windows and put the AC on but that was not working, even though I was told it was. When entering the elevator on the ground floor, there was an odor of a very musty basement, which at times we detected in our 2nd floor room.
Breakfast is very basic at best and every day had the same items. Fruit, yogurt, croissants, bread, a baked cake and the same ham and plastic wrapped cheese. This never varied during our 4 night stay.
Now with all that happened above the final insult was about to unfold. When we went to check out the owner was not around and had the same woman Maria who showed us the room to check us out. She presented the bill to us and said we needed to pay in cash .Since we knew they accepted credit cards, this was just another slap in the face! I told the women that we did not have the cash on hand and luckily she let us pay by credit card. Be forewarned it is no longer a suite as depicted but just a bedroom.
