Stayed 18th June, 2013 mature couple, plus friend.
Free hotel shuttle bus to and from Verona station a big plus (also takes you to the Opera and back, if that's your thing!) Arriving at the hotel - you need to ring the number given on booking.com it's a cental number for the 3 or 4 hotels in Verona (including the Picollo) which have the same owner and share a fleet of mini buses. You will then be put thru to Porta Palio who arrange for the shuttle bus to pick you up. The pick up point is outside the station (a long thin building) at the Mc Donalds end of the station. There is a Mc Donalds in the station concourse and it has it's own exit/entrance onto the street outside the station. You need to be outside on the street, outside the entrance to Mc Donalds. Outside the station can be busy (traffic & people) so to help the mini bus driver find you (they don't know what you look like!) I suggest you write Porta Palio on large sheet of paper and hold it so you find each other quickly and easily! There are a few different mini busses, ours was black and had hotel names on the side but there is also an unmarked white mini bus. The first shuttle from hotel to the station departs at 10am and then every half hour. You pick the shuttle up from outside the main entrance to the hotel, where it emerges from an underground car park (at least the 10am one did, later ones may be different!) It is great to have this free service.
We arrived in 35° C heat and were pleased the air-con in our room worked very well - have not got much faith in air-con generally but I have to say this was brilliant! Also, pleased to find 2 FREE bottles of mineral water in the mini bar in our room - so thoughtful, have not found this anywhere else! It is true that a wide variety of cold drinks are available to purchase from the refrigerated cabinet in the hotel reception area. Huge varety of pure fruit juices, water and soft drink. The mineral water was very reasonable - 1 Euro per 500ml bottle. Water was a LOT dearer than this at Verona airport and Verona Station...
The room was spotlessly clean and the bed had a lovely deep turquoise bedspread, beautiful quality and coordinated with the rooms colour scheme perfectly - as soon as I walked in I loved the room. The bed was very comfortable and this plus the air-con meant I had the best nights sleep of the 9 nights spent in Italy!
Reading Trip Advisor before I left, others had written of the great breakfast - they are right - best breakfast in Italy! The buffet had so much variety with lovely spacious breakfast room and very helpful staff - all help yourself, if something has run out, just a gesture to the staff and a smile brings an instant response, another basket of bread or whatever. The staff work hard and are very busy but if approached politely and with a smile are eager to help - this would be true anywhere! I say this because some comments have been negative about the staff which I think is unfair, if you treat people with courtesy and respect, they do the same! There is also a lovely outside breakfast area with umbrellas, lots of flowers, very beautiful and a great place to chill.
We only had one night in Porta Palio but wished we had more, very reasonable price, would stay again and recommend to all our friends! Also, I have never written a rewiew on Trip Adviser before but this hotel made me want to share the good experience! Thanks to all who posted comments earlier - very useful!
