My boyfriend and I booked A Casa di Barbara in Verona in the summer of 2009 for 3 nights at EUR80 per night. To start with, finding it was really tricky. When we eventually got there, we had to telephone the agent/owner to let us in. We waited for what seemed like ages in the scorching heat until they got there. We were shown to our room eventually and to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The chap who showed us around even laughed when he opened the "kitchen", which was in fact a tiny cupboard. When I asked about the air conditioning, which had been advertised when we booked, he pointed to the fan!!!! The breakfast was basic to say the least. Now, onto the room itself. It was dark, dingy and dirty. Neither my boyfriend nor I wanted to sleep in the bed, so we slept on top of all the sheets, fully clothed to avoid any contact. The toilet leaked every time you flushed it and the shower was gross!
As it had taken hours to find this place and we had tickets to the Ampitheatre that evening we decided we pretty much had to stay the first night. The next day we decided there was no way we would stay any further nights. We got in touch with the owner (through the local tourist office) and asked to have the two remaining nights refunded. After a dispute about the conditions of the property, we managed to retrieve the majority of our money for the second and third nights; I say majority as they would not refund the full EUR80 per night as the booking site had taken their cut already.
My boyfriend and I have both travelled quite a lot, including some pretty awful hostels around the world and neither of us had ever stayed in such a horrible, dirty "B&B". The service was appaling and I would not stay there again if someone paid me EUR80 and not the other way around.
Don't do it!!!!
