“Welcome break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

My boyfriend chose this hotel as a surprise birthday present and I have to say he chose well! From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and patiently answered all our questions even though they were clearly busy. We were there for liberation day and the hotel gave female guests a red rose which is the tradition on this particular holiday, I thought this was a nice touch. Although the hotel is in a great location it was incredibly quiet with no noise from other rooms or the street. We found that we could walk everywhere and didn't need a vaporetto pass at all. The room was clean and spacious with a generous bathroom which was also well maintained. Breakfast was pretty decent with the usual continental fare i.e. Ham, salami, cheese, fruit, yoghurt and a selection of bakery items.

This is a nice hotel near the Rialto Bridge. It is certainly not a luxury property. The staff (well, 95% or so) are most professional such as Andrea and Stephano who are at reception. The rooms are clean. Nothing special about the breakfast: sliced meats, cheese, breads, cakes, cereal, juices, eggs, etc., things you would see at good 3 star properties. The rooms had nice furniture but the pillows were as hard as a board, the water glasses in the washrooms were the cheap plastic in cheaper plastic wrappings, the hair dryer would work for 30-40 seconds and then stop for the same period so it took twice as long to dry my hair, the television picture on the LED screen only 'covered' 70% of the screen size. Would we stay again? Sure, but at only the right price point. The breakfast staff including a tall balding man who commented on how "Americans" are really ordering American coffee when they say " latte" ( wrong ) and the young lady who brought tea when asked to bring a "latte" and then rolled her eyes when she had to take back the tea were the only really troubling aspects of our visit. If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would do so, but only because of Andrea and Stephano I make this 4 stars.

This truly excellent 4star hotel 5minutes walk from the Rialto(think bridge, grand canal, and direct public waterbus connection to the airport) was converted from a previous bank building 6years ago.You could be forgiven for thinking it was brand new such is the standard of maintenance. We had room101 which has a hugely comfortable kingsize bed, plenty of storage space, and a large fully equipped bathroom with a full length tub. Do not all rush to try and book this room as I am sure all the other 50 rooms are of similar standard! The concierge desk is incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of Venice and the whole staff very kind and welcoming. Agood breakfast is served in the breakfast room, but the hotel does not have a restaurant. There is a small bar in the foyer. As you will have deduced, I and most other reviewers would unhesitatingly recommend this hotel.

3 of us have just come back from a long weekend in Venice staying at Hotel a La Commedia as a treat for our 40th birthdays and it was absolutely fantastic. The hotel was one of the best I've stayed in, our room - a junior suite was wonderful. All the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. Andrea on reception gave us recommendations on where to go, what to see, day trips, restaurants, advice so we didn't get ripped off and all of it was excellent, they couldn't have done enough for us, they really made our trip special. We will definately go back to that hotel with our husbands next time although another girlie weekend is definately on the cards, we would definately recommend Hotel a La Commedia to anyone wanting to stay in Venice.

We stayed at the Hotel A La Commedia on the strength of the Trip Advisor reviews. Things we thought were good: room well decorated with good quality furniture; thought had been given to comfort and practicality. The bathroom was spacious and well designed, though the step in and out of the bath to take a shower is high (it's absolutely fine unless you have mobility problems). There was plenty of storage space for clothes and suitcases. The bed was hard, but we found it very comfortable, though we'd have preferred duvet to blanket - that's a personal preference thing really though. The hotel staff were excellent: generally extremely helpful and they suggested two good restaurants to us: the Ai Mercanti was particularly good. The Da Carletto was ok: food quality there was good, but there was a 12% service charge labelled as "tax" on our bill, which I notice quite a lot of people have commented on when reviewing the restaurant. Things we thought were less good about the hotel: the reviews of breakfast have been excellent, but we were very disappointed. First, they had a very limited choice (compared with other Italian hotels we've stayed at, e.g. the Artemide in Rome, which was outstanding for breakfast, or the Palazzo Murat in Positano). Secondly, not everything was as fresh as it should have been. Finally, they provided juice, but (and this always gets to me) they also provided a menu which offered freshly squeezed juice at something like 3.50 or 4.50 extra. I can't really understand a decent hotel serving concentrated juice and then wanting so much extra for the fresh stuff. Generally, my husband and I actually felt the breakfast was poor. We are pretty positive in our reviews, and we're clearly at odds with several others on this. The small bar area down in the lobby is comfortable but the drinks are very expensive, and that's a shame because it was cold when we were in Venice and it would have been nice to sit down for a cuppa (on the other hand this is an expensive city)! We took the free trip to Murano: we didn't buy anything, but the free water taxi over there was worth it. The factory tour showing the glass making was perfunctory, which was disappointing, but they didn't pressure us to buy. Finally, the hotel is most easily accessed from the orange line Rialto Alilaguna stop from the airport, but somewhat strangely the hotel website recommends taking blue line to San Marco, which is about 15 mins walk. When we asked about the return journey in the lobby, they told us to go to Rialto! Overall, this is a very good hotel, but still with some room for improvement.

Spent 5 excellent nights, upgraded upon arrival to a lovely junior suite on the 3rd floor, spacious, clean, quiet and most helpful reception staff - especially Roberto Z. - pity about breakfast and breakfast staff not at all friendly and fruit in very short supply as was natural yogurt on most days and other healthy choice very little.
Near Rialto and San Marco too, walked everywhere ( well nearly) other then the cold April weather, it really was a good choice of hotel and venue.
Osteria a la Campana does excellent dinners nearby...

Room Tip: ask for top 3rd floor BUT be mind full of the 4th floor terrace which may be noisey in nicer weather...

Three of us stayed at this charming little hotel, me, my sister and mother. We wanted a restful weekend to see all the sites and this hotel fitted the bill. The location doesn't get much better than this, very close to all the sites, shops and restaurants with them all literally on your door step. The rooms are well sized, clean with lovely decor. My only complaints are the bed was hard and not very comfortable, also it was a disappointment not to have any tea and coffee making facilities in the room which i think is a must for any decent hotel.
The breakfast room was lovely and there was a great choice of food on offer with something for everyone i especially liked the strawberry tart. The reception bar was very, very small and would often be full in the evening which only allowed us to have a drink in there once, it would be much better if this was extended or if there was another bar inside the hotel somewhere.
All the staff are professional and polite and will make any reservations for you but our experience of this wasn't great and we found it better to do it ourselves. For example we got the hotel to make a reservation for a water taxi to the airport on our last night and we were disappointed that the taxi charged us 130 euro especially when the water taxi from the airport to the hotel only cost us 80 euro, thats 50 euro more and we felt a little ripped off, i think we would have got it for a much better price if we had negotiated and booked it ourselves. Also the hotel recommended and booked us into a restaurant called Ai Mercanti which turned out to be the worst meal of the holiday, the portions were very small and the food wasn't that great.
I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone going to Venice as the location and rooms are excellent. A word of warning Venice is very, very expensive, I was expecting something similar to London prices but i was shocked everything costs alot more than it does in London, for example 3 coffes in a cafe 21 euro, then for lunch 3 salads and 3 beers (nowhere special just a cafe) cost 80 euro!! The cost of things is crazy, but if you go prepared and expect to pay the high prices you'll have a great time as Venice is a beautiful city, there is nowhere like it in the world, its a very special place!!
