“Fantastic Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2006

We've just got back from a 5 day trip to Venice and this hotel was a perfect location for our stay. It's important to note that Venice can only be seen by foot or boat (no cars at all) so your location is important. Al Campiello is situated just 5 min walk from the Rialto bridge and 2 min from the nearest Vaporetto stop (water taxi). I would recommend booking the Superior Room with Canal View. At €125 per night, it's a lovely double room with a small balcony over-looking a canal with the Gondolas floating beneath you. This is a room only hotel so don't expect breakfast but there are plenty of cafes nearby to accomodate. The hotel is clean and serviced daily although there did seem to be a lack of clean towels. All in all, a great choice for a short-stay in this beautiful city. p.s. Don't forget your mosquito repellent as the city is rife with them!!

  • Liked — The Location/Views from Superior Room
  • Disliked — Lack of Clean towels and useless hotel hair-dryer!
  • Tips/Secrets — Venice does not have a big drinking culture but there is a great little bar round the corner from the hotel call 'Bar Eno' which services until 12.30ish. Alternatively, pick up one of the many cheap bottles of red wine from the nearby supermarket and enjoy on the hotel balcony of an evening.

In all fairness, Al Campiello quoted a rate of less than half of most other Venice hotels (euro 110). That said, you sure get what you pay for. The room was dreary, with bugs (both living and dead). When we returned after a day of sightseeing, wet towels that were left on the bathroom floor (we had to use them to dry the floor b/c the shower door didn't work properly) were still wet . . . and still on the floor. No view to speak of, as our windows opened into a wall. Our rooms were not in a "normal" hotel (ie. check in and walk up the stairs to your room), they were in a group of six or so rooms that we had to walk back out of the hotel, through a few alleys, and through a restaurant to get to. My guess is that Al Campiello, who I'm sure has nice rooms as well, found a deal on some cheap rooms in another building and decided to piggyback them on to their own brand. I wouldn't stay there again.

Al Campiello is a traditional Venice lodging, situated right in the heart of the real venice on a canal called Apostoli which is just behind the Rialto Bridge. This hotel, once a palazzo was in an excellent location for the water bus service or to see the main sites of venice on foot. Our room was beautiful with double windows opening out to a fantastic view of the canal and the gondolas passing beneath us. The standard was excellent it was clean, serviced every day and the bathroom was pristine. there is a safe in every room and reception open until the early hours, tv and phone in each room. The only negative is that this is a room only hotel with no food available so you do have to go out to eat, but the location makes this a pleasure and no problem at all. If you are only staying in venice for a short while you dont want to spend all your time travelling in and out. This hotel puts you at the heart of the real venice the sights, the sounds, the ambience and the convenience are all there. We paid 120 Euro per superior room per night! WOW it was a bargain and we would go back. Our vist and the price relates to end of May 2005 this hotel was a real find and we had perfect accomodation for our honeymoon!
