How lucky can you get? Book it now!
My first time in Venice, traveling alone. I had very stupidly booked a 6:15 a.m. KLM flight out of Venice (I'm going to hurt the travel agent, but that's another story--LOL) and suddenly panicked on my third and last day--how the heck could I get to the bus station in the middle of the night, from San Pantalon (Hotel Tivoli) to get the first bus (4:40a) to the airport? I kept getting lost during the day--there was no chance I could find my way at night, in the 60 watt bulbs-lit, quiet, spooky streets of Venice. The Informazione folks wanted to book me in Sofitel (Euro 293, down from 400 -- gulp!) and laughed, "Guess you're staying in San Pantalon tonight." NOPE. For three hours I hounded the hotels around the bus station to find a space. A very kind gentleman at one of the smaller hotels said a friend of his had had a cancellation. I ran there as fast as I could--and was successful in booking for just the one night!
The room was gorgeous. Clean. King-size bed. Quiet. Fabulous large bath, with shower cap, shampoo, soap, towel warmer, bidet. Little fridge tucked into the closet. TV. I felt like I was staying at a 4-star.
The location couldn't have been better. It's on a street that appears to have once been a canal, filled in--so it's very wide, for Venice. Peaceful, local, away--but just two blocks from the bus station. 30 steps from an actual grocery store where I could buy toothpaste (ran out after having brought my regulation 3 oz., thank you U.S.); and a couple of great little canal-side restaurants where I indulged in lobster & pasta for lunch. Charming and lovely.
But the best part was the staff. The owner was endearing, put up with my attempts to speak Italian, and was extremely kind. Held my room for an hour while I packed quickly in San Pantalon and ran through the streets (got lost again) to take the room. The woman who cleaned also helped book me, and was generous and sweet. And the very handsome young man who called to wake me up in the middle of the night--my last in Venezia, sniff!--was right on time and also very kind, helping me with my bag.
Paid Euro 105 for the night and it was worth every penny. Would definitely stay again. Too bad I had to leave too early for the coffee!
Thank you Locanda Marinella! You are wonderful!
