“Wonderful conclusion to our Italian dream vacation!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

We stayed at Al Teatro B&B for 5 nights. Venice was the last stop for us on a 2 week Italian vacation. I can not begin to say enough good things about our stay here.

We stayed in the Amber Room - a very nicely sized room with king size bed, large private bath and a small, but adequate balcony/terrace overlooking the canal. The bed was very comfortable, the room, and the entire B&B, were immaculate.

Eleanora, the owner/proprietor, could not have been a better hostess. She was always very quick to respond to emails. She provided explicit instructions on how to reach the B&B from the train station, which could not have been easier. Every morning, while sitting at breakfast, she asked us, and the other guests if we needed any assistance with directions, recommendations, or any other way she could help, with what we wanted to do in or around Venice that day. Upon our arrival, she provided us a map of Venice, and marked where the B&B was located, and then marked on the map any other points of interest, restaurants, etc that she recommended, directions for vaporetto use, and on and on.

Breakfast was typical European style breakfast with a variety of cereals, yogurts, bread/pastries, meat and cheese, coffee, tea, juice, milk. There's no excuse to leave the breakfast table hungry.

The location of the property is PERFECT. A short walk to Piazza San Marco, but far enough away that it was quiet. A slightly longer walk in the other direction gets you to either the Accademia or the Rialto bridge and market. It is a very short walk (approximately 3 minutes) from the Giglio vaporetto stop, with no bridges to cross.

The canal below our balcony was heavily trafficked by gondolas. It was lovely to have a bit of time in the afternoon/evening, open the windows and listen to the gondolas float by with their musicians and singers aboard.

It never felt as though we were staying at a B&B, but rather staying with a friend. We definitely hope to return to Venice one day, and will look no further than the Al Teatro B&B for our accomodations.

It was our family's first time in Italy - and everything was planned by my 13-year old son. We had taken the train from Milan via Verona and you can imagine we were all tired. But once we got to Eleonora's home - she welcome us warmly and gave us wonderful insights. First we had a very good meal in a place she recommended, then the next couple of days - were wonderful because first -- she is so warm, the location was perfect - not too near the Duomo to be noisy but close enough to be comfortable, and the vaporetti was very near too. So despite the rains -- we felt close enough to be able to run "home" if we needed to and it just kept us happy and dry....

What a fantastic surprise to arrive in Venice by vaporetto/water taxi, wrestle the luggage up into the square (no bridges! this is a HUGE plus when travelling with bags in Venice!), to follow the simple directions from Al Teatro to their front door...and wind up right on a tiny canal in the heart of the city.
It was a perfect way to start our stay with Eleonora and Fabio at Al Teatro.
One warning/caveat: the luggage must be carried up a fairly steep flight of stairs to reach the B&B once inside the building although I imagine your hosts would help you if you asked.

You are given a key to the outside door of the building and then another to the inside door to the actual B&B. There is a key card to access each individual room which then plugs in as per typical European hotels to power the room. Eleonora greeted us with very good English and got us settled in, gave us maps, helped with reservations, directions, vaporetto lines & etc. She was immensely helpful. I can't say enough good. Her reservation recommendations were the best of our vacation.

We stayed in the pink/rosa room - large and airy and right on the canal. Bathroom was entirely adequate, beds were comfortable, and if the worst thing is to wake up to boat engines in the outside canal, well, I can live with that.

Breakfast was standard continental fare - entirely fine. Wifi was available but not free - it was very reasonable, though. (I think maybe 10 Euros?)

The location and price, though, are umatched/unrivaled in my mind. Al Teatro is off the beaten path enough to remain quiet but centrally located enough to easily get wherever we needed. Wonderful "secret" spot in Venice and I cannot recommend it enough.

(ps - Make sure to go to La Mascareta for dinner - we went twice...it was out of this world.)

Room Tip: We loved our room (pink/rosa) which was light and airy and with excellent views of the canal.

We picked Al Teatro because of its closeness to San Marco Square, water busses and bridges. We didn't expect it to be in the heart of Venice. It's located right near two absolutely charming bridges which, unlike other bridges in Venice, most tourists haven't found yet. We ate salami and cheese sandwiches seated on the steps of one, a thing one cannot do on most of the bridges. Just about everybody who came by while we were near our B&B said, "Oh my goodness! Look how charming it is over here!" Or in German, Spanish, or Italian. Then the jealousy came as we put the key into the door. "You're staying HERE??? How did you manage to find such a place?"
We loved it. The ground floor as you step in was not in the best shape- peeling paint, crooked staircase. But that soon became part of the charm. The stairs led to a door where we were oft greeted with "Bon journo!" or "Buena sera!" by Eleanora or one of her charming children from the dining room with the fresco on the ceiling. Then up to our room, the green room, for quiet and privacy... well almost quiet. Twice in the afternoon and twice in the evening, if we happened to be in, we were serenaded from gondalas in the canals right under our windows. Accordions or guitars accompanied by beautiful voice echoed against walls bringing a delighted feeling, not unlike that of the ice cream man's joyous song.
Side note: Don't be afraid of the group gondalier session. We were surprised again to find that the bargain flotilla employs the finest accordion player, and the best voice to echo the walls below our room- Josef, a retired fireman with a voice that just may rekindle some fire.
Our room? Charming. Well-set-up, comfortable. Zzzzz. Despite being in the heart of Venice, the nights were quiet.
Breakfast was delicious. We always had muesli, flakes, yogurts, fruit, jams, honeys, Nutella, at least three varieties of fresh breads, traditional breakfast cakes, coffee, tea, carrot/fruit juice, orange juice, and were also offered hams, salami, and cheese. Personally, I couldn't get enough of the tasty muesli.
For anyone interested, Eleanora was happy to share her expertise- "Today is the perfect day to get away from crowds by going to Durano and the islands around it. Buy a bus pass. Do you like seafood? I know a place..." Or "With the rain and wind, it's a great time to see some museums. Tomorrow they will be crowded, a good time to see the market. To get to the airport, you can go this way or this way. I recommend..."
An excellent taste of Venice, one I'm eager to try again. Thank you, Eleanora! Ciao, Venezia! Until we meet again.

Room Tip: The amber room has a balcony and is, we've heard, quite romantic and lovely. It has a tub as wel...

Our room was large, airy and very clean. It was a corner room looking down at an intersection of canals, and we were seranaded by gondolas every evening. The dining room was adorned with 15th and 16th century frescoes! But the best part of the B&B was our welcoming hostess, Eleanora. She provided us with lots of helpful sightseeing advice, and interesting insights into the Venetian way of living. We enjoyed trying to speak Italian to her daughters while they practiced their English. The B&B was conveniently located. It was an easy walk everywhere.

We booked the king-size bedroom with the balcony, and beautiful new bathroom--with tub, which combines the antiquity of Venice with modern conveniences. The B&B was easy to locate, near a vaporetto stop. We drank our wine on the balcony as we enjoyed the musicians and singers in the passing gondoliers. The B&B is immaculate and Eleanor is a charming hostess who serves a bountiful breakfast. We wished we could have stayed longer, and hope to return some day.We HIGHLY recommend Al Teatro B&B!!! Spent 2 nights here and couldn't have asked for more. Location is very close to St Marks Square and also the Giglio water boat stop. We had the Amber Room which was set up as a triple and we had plenty of room. This room has a balcony overlooking the canal and it's just lovely watching the gondolas go by while they're serenading. Eleanora, the owner, speaks excellent English and was very helpful in recommending good local restaurants, transport options, out of the way sights etc. Note, although WIFI is promoted as available in all rooms -and works perfectly well- it must be paid for. 5e for 5 hours or 10e for 12 hours, cumulative. A mIni bar is also available in the room. This is a lovely, very clean, well located B&B and I would definitely stay again.
