“A Fabulous Stay in a Palazzo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2010

I've stayed at the Locanda Ca' del Console 4 times (twice in 2004 and twice in 2009) and adore the ambience of this ancient Palazzo in the Castello district of Venice. Locanda Ca' del Console is a 5 minute walk to Saint Mark's and about 10 minutes to Rialto and is situated close to Campo Mario Formosa and San Giovanni e Paolo. All the rooms have classical furnishings with frescos and the lounge where breakfast is served is extremely comfortable. Signora Marina is the charming owner whose expectional hospitality and warmth makes this a memorable stay. Doina is also very attentive to guest needs and always goes that extra mile. This is the place I will always stay when I visit Venice because you are treated so well in such comfortable surroundings.

I was recently in Venice with work, a professional dance company on tour. Our rooms had been booked for us by a third-party and when we arrived, the Ca del Console guest house was completely unacceptable for the needs of the company and did not provide any of the amenities we required:
-the internet connection was spotty at best and did not work in the rooms
-some of the rooms are situated directly off of the main room which is used to serve breakfast in the morning so it is very busy at an early hour (as we perform in the evening, this was unacceptable)
-to my knowledge, there was no laundry service offered
-there is no 24-hour concierge, as is advertised on their website: the woman who checked us in is more of a house keeper and if we had needed anything at an odd hour we would have had to wake her up as she lived in a room downstairs from the guest rooms, which would have been extremely uncomfortable for us.

Worst of all, when we decided that we couldn't stay here for the remainder of our stay in Venice, I was informed that they did not have a cancellation policy and therefore I would have to pay for 5 nights that I wouldn't be staying!! I found this completely unacceptable.

The rooms were clean enough but since the guest house is quite old, nothing felt very clean. The service was terrible-- both the woman who wouldn't give me a refund (the owner) and the woman who check us in (the house keeper) were very rude to our group. The location is somewhat isolated so it felt a bit sketchy to be walking around on your own at night (as it is easy to get lost in Venice already!). The rooms were small, stuffy and did not offer much privacy (see above). The value for what I paid (120 euro per night) was very poor. As mentioned, we changed hotels and were also paying 120 euro per night at a much nicer hotel with better amenities 2 minutes away from the Piazza San Marco so 120 euro per night at the Ca del Console was hardly worth the price.

I would only recommend staying here if you are an extremely easy-going traveler and even then, it is expensive for what you get.

The hotel was in a great location for access to Venice and all the main tourist areas. I had researched the location lots before we travelled as many reviews said it was hard to find, and despite 5 different maps and instructions we still walked past it once! probably because there is no sign on the door like you would expect with a hotel! I loved the character of the house and the antique furnishings, our room was in the attic, it was a fair climb up the steps which would not be ideal for everyone but we did have a nice terrace it would have been better with chairs to sit on!

The room was clean and tidy and seemed perfect until the 1st night we got eaten by mosquito's. The house keeper was helpful the next morning and loaned a repellent plug, unfortunaltey the electrics on the socket went in the middle of the second night so my boyfriend took action and was swatting them. Unfortunatley he dislocated his shoulder in the process but that was his own fault!

Breakfast was basic but nice enough, the housekeeper was very friendly and helpful. I think it was overpriced 450 euro for 3 nights considering you don't get all the advantages of a hotel but it was unique and in a good location.

My wife and I stayed at this place a few years ago in Feb 2004, and it was really very nice. Quiet, pleasant and spacious. But having just returned, staying another 3 nights in Oct 2009, the place has lost most of its aforementioned appeal. Just to describe a little, the ‘hotel’ is centred around a main rectangular living area. Off which are a number of bedrooms, and a corridor to a couple more bedrooms (where we stayed previously). When we stayed previously one of these doors form the living area were double glass doors, which led to the breakfast area, away from the bedrooms.
For this stay, we arrived late, about 11pm, and were not really made to feel all that welcome, having disturbed the housekeeper. We were put in one of the bedrooms off the living area. The rooms itself was nice, large and clean with character. Fine, no problem with the actual room. However, from before 7am each morning, the main ‘living area’ filled with guests gathered for their breakfast, woke us up. As it transpires this is now the breakfast area, and the office, and what was the breakfast area is now another bedroom! So instead of a relaxing break, we had a daily start of clattering crockery, and the owner and the housekeeper (and numerous of other guest/friends) shouting to each other just outside our door. When we emerged bleary eyed from our room, into what was now a cluttered dining room, people couldn’t help but look (as we did when they emerged), making it feel awkward and uncomfortable. Although you’re out most of the day, we found this to be a poor start, especially as we wanted a little lie in having a well earned break in Venice from our 18-month old. Additionally, when we wanted to return to the hotel after pounding the streets, there was often a huddle of people on the sofa just outside our room, chattering in very loud Italian, making it impossible to use the living area – or our room, to relax in. Which is just really disappointing and frustrating when you consider that this is our holiday, and, we paid 510 Euros for three nights (not cheap). We consider that there was no real respect for us as guests, and would unfortunately say that the changes made have ruined this place. We would say to avoid this place at all costs.

On our 2nd morning, the power tripped and we called the hotel to inform them about this. They said that they could only fix the problem in the evening. We went out the whole day and went back to the hotel in the evening. We realized that the power supply was not up yet! We called the hotel immediately because it is impossible for us to do anything because the apartment was pitch dark. The hotel staff was not friendly and she accused us causing the power supply to be cut off, which we did not. She said that the power supply problem could only be fixed the next morning. However, we needed to catch a train early the next morning so we had to stay there without lights or warm water for bathing! She suggested that we move into their main hotel but it was not possible because we had not packed our luggages and it is impossible to pack in the dark without flashlights or candles. Finally, we asked for a refund for that night. She refused at first but in the end, she agreed verbally. She asked us to provide her the ebanking details so that she could transfer to money back to my friend's account. We provided her the details the next day and we waited for her reply.
After 1 week, I sent another email to remind her about the refund. This time, she replied and said that she needed to hire a specialized worker to fix the problem and nothing she will refund us.

I feel that this is really too much because we paid 180Euros for a night and since the basic necessity of electricity could not be met, we should at least be given the refund as verbally agreed by the hotel.

We booked directly with the B&B for a standard double room (Room of the Angel) one month before, but when we arrived they had no rooms left so they put us up in single room (let’s compare the marketing photo of our room vs. the room itself), because they gave my reserved room to a family of 4 people, so with the same room they had much money! We did talk to management about this problem, but the answer was “if you don’t like this accomodation you look for somewhere yourself!”. Bad management!
