If you are looking for a hotel that has 24hr concierge, a minibar, TV, room-service with maids clad in uniform pushing hostess trolleys, or any of the other homogenised hotel experiences then this place is NOT for you. Those people that wrote negative reviews about this place for the main part have completely missed the point. Yes, the entrance is along a dark and mysterious covered alley, with statues spooking you from corners. The stairwell has a naked light bulb, casting striking shadows from the cast metal railings onto medieval walls. Inside the ‘hotel’ it feels like an artist’s studio - light and airy with contemporary art casually scattered in places (yes, it’s not supposed to be on the walls). The main room has a view to die for over the Grand canal where you can bask in the sun watching tourists jealously point at you. The room has a piano with music scores piled on top, inviting you to play, or at least ask Alexanjdro your host to play. The bedrooms are large, with minimal furnishings and good quality bathrooms, working on the less-is-more approach. We stayed in the small back room, one of the two that doesn’t have a view, but it still had a wonderful feel to it (and was reassuringly cheaper). We had a sneak look at the other rooms, which are palatial in size and have incredible carvings on the ceilings, left over from this building’s previous life. This is not a normal hotel. It is a unique, arty, home steeped in history. If you want Best Western’s or Hilton’s go there. If you want a non-touristy authentic experience that is truly special (and frankly who doesn’t?) then I cannot recommend it enough. Just don’t expect branded toiletries in the bathroom…
