I booked two "superior" double rooms for myself and another couple. Perhaps the word superior has a different meaning in Italian, but I honestly did not think that the two rooms on the fourth floor (no lift) truly merited that description. Nothing seriously wrong with them, both a reasonable size although not a great deal of space round the bed in ours, clean bathrooms, fresh towels every day etc. but not "superior"
The breakfasts were good - more than one usually gets or expects in Italian hotels.
I had absolutely no difficulty in finding the hotel which is in an obscure calle

This is a small hotel in a convenient locatiion -- that can, nonethless, be hard to find if you don't know Venice. Make sure you get directions before you go. It is a 10 minute walk from Plaza Roma.

We actually did not stay in the main hotel. We were two adults and two children and they put us up in a very well located apartment somewhat near the Guggenheim. If I was going with kids again I would specifically request the apartment as it was sufficfiently roomy and had a full kitchen -- and came at a pretty good price (for Venice).

The only two complaints I have are that you needed to check-in and check-out of the main hotel (a 10-15 minute walk from the apartment) -- which was a pain with the luggage. In addition, the apartment had some severe hot water problems. I would specifically asked them whether those have been fixed before I booked it again.

Overall, a very good choice for a family.

If it's a hotel you are expecting (as we were, having read the previous reviews) do not stay here! It's more like a run down B&B. The entrance is tiny which is not a problem but the stale, damp smell when you are let in the door is disgusting. You then make your way up the narrow stairs to the reception - to call this a reception desk is a joke! There is a small desk area with a high stool in front of it on a very narrow passageway which you have to try to squeeze by every time you want to get in and out of the building. You have to ring a bell to be allowed in the front door every time you come back and you have to hand in your key every time you leave because it's magnetic?? The room itself was small which we expected but we had booked a superior room so I'd hate to see what the standard rooms were like. It also had a damp smell but it was cleaned well every day. Compared to other hotels we stayed in Italy during this trip the Ca San Polo is definitely not worth the money. The only positive it has going for it is the location, it is within easy walking distance of most of the main sights.

Excellent location on a quiet little street a few easy minutes from a vaporetto stop and 20 minutes easy walk from the San Marco square.
The room size was average by Venice standards, but extremely clean and the bathroom looked like it had just been remodeled.
Breakfast was adequate and served in a lovely room with a view of Venice roofs.
No view from our room, but it was very quiet and well appointed. Central air-conditioning was in perfect working order and kept us cool and happy at night despite the tremendous heat wave that wilted us by noon every day.
No room is wasted for the reception desk, which is tucked away on the landing on the second floor. Still, whoever stood next to it was always friendly and helpful.

  • Liked — location and well-appointed room and bathroom
  • Disliked — no view from the window, but it is not exceptional in Venice
  • Tips/Secrets: — Skip the gondola ride, but invest in a 3 day pass on the vaporettos.

We spent a weekend here at the beginning of July. We had a quadruple room. It looked like a suite with the extra double bed in the sitting room area. It made the room cramped, but still okay. The primary bed was comfortable, but the extra bed felt like a sofa pull out bed. Our arrival was delayed until airport transfer options were limited. Buses, water buses and Alilaguna all closed. Therefore we took a land taxi (30 euros) to Piazza Roma and walked from there. A water taxi would have cost triple that amount and, as it turns out, would not have saved much walking. The hotel night receptionist, Lidio I think his name was, was fantastically helpful. I called when we arrived and he helped with the transfer options. He then gave us very good walking directions to Frari Church, where he came to meet us. This was about 2 a.m. The hotel has an arrangement with a particular glass factory in Murano. They provide a free, private water taxi to the factory. You tour the factory and buy if you want. It was not high pressure at all. Your return trip is up to you. The water buses are about 5 euros each. You can buy a 24 hour pass for 11 euros each and it includes land buses. It was a nice European hotel.
