The room was perfect and the price was right. Everything was clean and the room was attended to every day. Breakfast came on time every day and was very enjoyable. Fresh croissants with spreads, fresh rolls, prepackaged toast and coffee or tea were provided each morning on a steel platter. Our room was very private even though it was right next to reception (room 1).
We were reminded on three occasions of the 24 hour service offered by the B&B staff - someone was always waiting at the desk to buzz us in through the front door (a key was not provided), except when we needed them most - to check out and get our bags from storage so we could make our 15:04 boat ride to the airport. I timed everything perfectly (as I usually do) and told two members of the staff that we would return to the B&B at 14:30 to pick up our bags and pay for the room. They both heard me and acknowledged.
When we returned after a bit of shopping and exploring we found the front door to be locked with nobody inside. We rang the bell dozens of times, banged on the door, even lifted the mail slot to yell inside. After 10 minutes of waiting I walked to the main street hoping to get a signal on my cell phone (there is none anywhere near the B&B) so I could call the front desk. I made the call - no answer. After waiting a little longer the two employees on duty finally returned to the front door, unlocking it and walking inside without so much as an acknowledgment (an apology seemed out of the question).
One of the employees left and the other resumed his position at the desk. When I asked where they had gone and why I couldn't get in, he said "we were at lunch." I reminded him that I had told them both when we would arrive but he did not respond and began talking to another woman that had walked in. We were in such a rush that we accidentally broke a bottle of wine that we had just purchased (to bring back to the states). He offered to clean it up but seemed to ignore it after that - we kept moving our bags away from the spill. By then he was talking to someone on his cell phone and didn't seem interested in helping with our bags so we did our best to get them down the stairs on our own. After mine fell down the stairs he came down to help, if only to prevent damage to the carpet and walls. I handed him my cash payment and we ran out towards our boat. Not once was an apology offered - he barely even acknowledged us the whole time!
p.s. - the credit card machine was "out of service" during our stay , so I had no choice but to pay cash. Room rate was Euro 80 per night, which seemed very reasonable for Venice. I stayed in three B&B's during my stay and all offered great rooms and mostly good service, but not being there when we really needed them was really a huge problem.
