“make sure you don't miss breakfast..!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2008

We have just returned from a brief stay at Locanda Matir, and whilst this small, comfortable hotel benefits from a great location in the city's university district, and tidy, characterful rooms - it is let down by an uptight management and desperately poor 'breakfast'.

Upon arrival, we were informed that breakfast was to be served beween the hours of 08.30 and 09.30am. Although this seemed a tight window, we dutifully reported the following morning - eager to take advantage of the 'included' bonus that was breakfast.

Unfortunately, what awaited us was hugely disappointing.

We were not naive enough to expect an al a carte feast, nor a bountiful spread of locally sourced delights. We did however hope for something vaguely edible and of reasonably recent origin. Sadly, what we got was a selection of out of date biscuits, a 5 day old (a generous guess) cherry tart, and 3 pear halves swimming in a sickly sweet gloop - washed down with coffee that can best be described as 'anaemic'.

This in itself is not reason to be upset - we soon found solace in a nearby cafe - however, we did resolve to give breakfast a miss the following morning, in favour of a well-earned lie-in. However, on surfacing (at around 10.30am), we were rather abruptly rebuked for having missed breakfast that morning!

Shame, as in all other respects, this hotel is a good find - and the staff were accomodating of our request for a room away from the noisy street noise (one side of hotel looks out onto busy student bar).

Just a word of warning then re breakfast and for those who decide not to get up in time to sample it... shame on you :)

We were very impressed with the location of this hotel and the value for money. It is in an excellent location right next to Margheritta Square where u can get very cheap wine (we recommend taking your empty water bottles to the wine shop on the square and getting the man to fill them up with your choice of wine!, we had 1.5litres of merlot for 2.20Euro!)
If you read the directions from previous travellers it is very easy to find. We walked there from the train station and it only took us 10minutes)

The Locanda Matir is about what you will expect in this price range in Venice. It is simple and clean, but difficult to find if you are not familiar with the twists and turns of Venice alleyways! (Fortunately, a waitress in a nearby cafe left her station to show me to it. I never would have found it on my own!) It is, as advertised a short walk from the bus/train station. But be forewarned that there are about 4 canals to cross so if you are carrying bulky bags this is a challenge. Some nice American gentlemen helped me across 3 of them. The water taxi did not wish to passenger me, probably too short of a fare. But the canal that runs behind the hotel was had taxi traffic and there is a stair from the canal, so maybe if you offer them an extra tip they will take you. With luggage the vaporetto is no better option than walking.

The hotel itself is nicely appointed. Clean room with a little refridgerator. Satellite TV. Coffee and tea. Comfy bed, good storage space. I had a private bath which was equipped with nice soft towels and a few ammenities.

The staff is friendly, though they do not speak much English, so if you are like me, a language philistine, it is a little troublesome. But they are patient and with a few words and signs we were able to communicate the essentials.

One thing to make note of is that this hotel is on a campo which is busy "late" into the night with cafes, restaurants and pubs. There was a pub just below my window, on a side "street", serving a college-aged crowd. They were well behaved, and really all I could hear was the music when I closed my shutters and windows. (The weather was mild so I did not need the air conditioner. So I do not know if this would be a problem in the heat of summer.) Sometime around midnight, this all seemed to stop, as I was never awakened by it.

Overall, I truly enjoyed staying at the Locanda Matir. It is conveniently located to the vaporetto. I liked staying near the busy square and always having people around as I went to and from the hotel. There are interesting shops, landmarks, churches and a nice market for fresh fruit and goodies. Traveling as a single woman, I always felt safe.

Just back from Venice after having a lovely visit there. Had booked as a surprise for my hubbie so was nervous that the hotel that I had chosen was ok. Ended up being perfect for our needs. Nestled in a little cul de sac off a really vibrant Campo or square with a number of restaurants, a few pubs, supermarket & a gellatio to die for! Chose a room without a view as the lady suggested it would be quieter & when the shutters were closed you could hear nothing of the buzz that was outside. Breakfast was only served between 8.30 - 9.30 & you have to check out by 10 the morning you are leaving. (would have liked longer lie ons) but other than that everything was great. The lady replied to my emails always that day or the next. Just note that I got a cheaper rate of €150 for 2 B&B by emailing the hotel directly. Really enjoyed the trip!

Hotel was reasonably priced clean and well run. Do not be put off by the slightly seedy looking alley providing access to it. Breakfast is very limited but it is easy to get something in the square adjacent. Only issue with the room was the two single beds pushed together to make a ‘double’.

Great location with loads of friendly bars and cafes where you can just sit, watch the world go by and soak up the convivial atmosphere. Overall would recommend Venice, we really enjoyed wandering around the back streets and getting lost amongst the canals.

My 40th birthday present from my boyfriend was a surprise trip to venice for 4 days. The hotel was lovely but a little hard to find at first, so get a map and plan your route before you arrive as the hotel is only a 10 to 15 minute walk from the piazzalo de roma bus station, but we didnt have a map, so it took us around an hour to find it. Although small, with only 6 rooms, it was very clean, tidy and comfortable. The maid goes into the room daily to make beds and clean bathroom, but does not give you clean cups or restock the tea, coffee, sugar etc. . . . . Be prepared for lots of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must ! also if you want a trip on the gondolas, shop around. the price varies from 80 euros to 200 euros and we got caught for the 200 euros, which was at the time around £143 for 45 minutes. . . . a trip to St. marks square is a must, but the nearer you get to the square, food and drink becomes dearer. the average price for 2 coffees in St. marks square is around £11. we went there by day and by night and both are two very different experiences, but i would recommend both and in the evening to sit in the square with a coffee, your loved one and an orchestra playing is very romantic. . . . there are lots of big posh hotels in venice, but i would recommend this hotel over the posh ones every time as its great value for money. . the restaurants and cafes close to the hotel were also good value for money and the Dickens in san margherita square where the hotel is located had nice food and excellent friendly service. . . . . i also found venice to be a very clean place. . . . . if you go, i hope you enjoy it as much as we did. . . .lastly, be aware of small children pickpocketing. . .

We have just returned from a lovely long weekend at the Locanda Matir and am pleased to say it lived up to the good reviews it has received.

We did initially struggle to find the hotel, as there is only a sign on one side of the lane (which happened to be the one we couldn't see from the direction we were walking!). Once we arrived in the room, we were happy to be greeted with a clean room, with a well kept en-suite (although the shower was just big enough to turn around in!).

I would also like to correct the first review below who stated that you can't see the canal. We stayed in Room 202 and could see both the Square and the Canal from our window quite clearly!

The bar downstairs could be a bit noisy at times, but added to the atmosphere of our trip. All the attractions are a conveniant 10-15 minute walk away, which allows you to discover Trattoria's and bars along the way.

The restaurants and bars are more expensive around St Mark's Square, I would recommend heading down to the waterfront at Dorsoduro where you can enjoy slightly cheaper prices and a great view out over the Giudecca Canal.

Gondala's are expensive (about 80 euro's) but can be haggled down if things are quiet for them. It's easier to pay the 3 Euro's and catch the Varporetto from the Piazzale Roma all the way down the Grand Canal to the Lido and experience the same views! Try and sit outside at the back of the boat for better views!

Enjoy Venice!
