“A lovely stay in Venice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

This small guest house was very centrally located- we walked to St. Marks in 15 minutes and were at the Rialto in less than 10! Our room - double overlooking small canal was comfortable and well equipped and was cleaned every day. We were there during the acqua alta and Stefano loaned us wellington boots without which we would have been unable to get around- be warned if you are visiting Venice in the winter months that this can happen! If you are prepared it helps! The fridge was a real bonus and we stopped at the Billa supermercato for snacks and drinks. Really recommended for location and comfort.

Room Tip: We were not bothered about having a room with a view BUT if you are the ones facing the Grand Canal...

This hotel was in great location. The rooms were big. We are family of 5 and we still had lots of room in the room. Bathroom was big too. Staff were nice and breakfast was good. It gets delivered to your room too which was good.

Room Tip: We had room number 1 which was big. great room/

We stayed in the Junior Suite which was huge and had 3 large sets of windows that faced onto both the Grand Canal and a side canal. From our room we looked on to and over to the Rialto fish and fruit markets, the courts, the gondolas, treghetto's, plenty of day time canal action - with beautiful calm nights. Stefano welcomed us at check-in and will provide assistance with your bags on arrival when you ring the bell at the start of the stairs in the entry. We followed his specific instructions and had no problems at all finding the locanda - but I would recommend arriving in daylight hours. Stefano delivered our continental breakfast to our room each morning, and the coffee was great thank you! Stefano was also available in the morning to provide us with recommendations and assistance when we needed it. Locanda Leon Bianco was everything we needed for our stay and much more - Thank you Stefano! We would recommend this locanda for independent travellers not requiring a full-service hotel experience, but rather wanting a great position, wonderful room with fabulous views and breakfast provided. Bathroom amenities and a fridge also provided.

Room Tip: Junior suite with grand canal views!!

This is not a huge hotel, it's more a guest house. It was exactly what we wanted, a base to explore Venice. I have read other reviews before we went, which indicated that it was difficult to find, not so! Before we went Stephano emailed me directions and it was in fact easy to find.
The room was a good size, and clean. The bed was big and very comfortable. The en suite bathroom had a shower, wash basin, toilet and bidet. All was clean and sufficient.
We were provided with keys to the front doors and could come and go as we pleased.
Breakfast was served in the room by Stephano, and was coffee or tea as requested, orange juice, warm croissants, rolls, melba toast and jam.
Again, I see someone else has said the walls were paper thin, well we must have mutes in the next room! We heard nothing from other rooms.
The location is great, only minutes from the Rialto bridge, and although our room didn't, some rooms look out over the Grand Canal.
At the end of the stay we had to leave the room by 10.30 but it was no problem at all to leave our bags until early evening so we could enjoy our last day in Venice and then pick them up for the trip home.
I thoroughly recomend this hotel, if you accept it's a small homely guest house.

We just returned from our honeymoon in Venice and were very happy with our stay at the Locanda Leon Bianco. The air conditioning worked beautifully, the views of the Grand Canal were lovely, and the shudders and windows absolutely blocked out any sound of the canal. I was concerned about that last one! Stefano provided excellent directions, we found the hotel easily. However, I would agree with others that it might be helpful to add some more visible signage on the front door, as the doorbell for the LLB was listed in the manner of an apartment in a building in the US.

The room was cleaned every morning and the breakfast was delivered exactly at the time we requested every morning. The location in Cannaregio was ideal, a 5 minute walk to the Ca d'Oro vaporetto stop. It was more of a residential neighborhood than the crazy touristy areas closer to San Marco. Both Stefano and Massimo were wonderful and incredibly helpful. It is worth noting that staff is not onsite at all hours, they were there mostly in the morning. This was not a concern for us at all, we enjoyed feeling as if we were staying in a residence rather than a hotel. However, I can see some people wanting a little more availablity of staff. The room had a fridge, a safe, and really reliable wi-fi, all three of which proved to be very valuable to us on our trip. I cannot recommend highly enough that you plug in the insect repeller. Three days into our trip I was bitten badly by giant mosquitos all over my hands (we kept the windows open too much). We finally figured out that the plug-in was an insecticide, and it stopped the mosquito problem immediately, I was not bitten again.

The stairs up to the hotel are fairly steep and it took us a few days to realize that there is a light, which would have been helpful if it had been marked. (Italy always makes me realize how spoiled we are as Americans, with all the directions we receive on how to do absolutely everything). You could walk to San Marco, or take the vaporetto, which is a beautiful way to see the city as you float down the Grand Canal. We highly recommend the compass app on your smartphone or bringing one with you. Sometimes the only way we knew if we were going the right way was to use our compass, even with maps. I would highly endorse Stefano's recommendation to take the express bus from the airport to the Piazzale Roma (main bus station - more of a piazza) and then take the No. 1 Vaporetto to the Ca D'Oro stop. Everything in Venice is more expensive than you would anticipate, so saving a bit by not taking an exorbitant water taxi or Alilaguna is a great way to save. Occasionally the vaporetti can get crowded, but if you move to the back, there was almost always a seat.

Venice is an amazing city, and not a place where you would spend a lot of time in your hotel. If you like the amenities of American hotels and want to stay at the hotel a lot, I would not recommend this hotel. If you would like a clean place, with kind and helpful people, a feeling of being in an old Italian house, and a wonderful safe location, then I cannot recommend Locanda Leon Bianco enough.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for a Grand Canal view. It was absolutely worth the extra money. :)

We stayed for 2 nights at the Locanda Leon Bianco. The hotel itself is clean, the rooms are adequate and the views from the canal view room are really very impressive.

The bathrooms are sufficiently clean if small and in need of a refurb. The walls between rooms are paper thin - to the extent that you can literally hear every single word that your neighbour is saying which was a little disconcerting for us.

The owner was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast served in the room was a nice touch.

We felt the hotel was overpriced for the standard which is why I have only rated it 3 stars, but then perhaps that is just what to expect in Venice.

This hotel is more of a B&B. It is exactly what we wanted, a slice of life in Venice. Short on amenities but loaded with charm. You stay here for the view and location. Our room, the corner room, had canal views that could not be matched. The room was large, clean and air conditioned. Stefano, was great. The proximity to shops, dining and even a wifi cafe could not be beat.
Finding the hotel is a slight challenge but if you follow the directions you will not have a problem.
If you expect a typical hotel experience I would not suggest this place. If, on the other hand, you want a great room, a fabulous view of the canal (Rialto & market) along with the a slice of Venetian life, this is the place. I would definitely stay here again
