'I'm coming here again!' No, this wasn't what five-year-old Alice declared at the end of the holiday at Union Lido but what she yelled within the first second of entering the pool complex. In an instant she had clocked the suite of slides, fountains and water splash pools which supplemented the main pools. She was eventually prised away and persuaded to hit the beach in the afternoon. Even better.
Postcard-perfect, the Adriatic with its long stretch of azure blue shallow water lapped golden sands all under the watchful scrutiny of beautiful bronzed lifeguards in scarlet and white singlets and shorts strutting about the headland and skimming around the swimmers, pedallo sailors and windsurfers in their SALVATAGGIO boats. Okay, so I'm being a bit subjective here. Maybe Alice wasn't that interested in eye candy but we mums appreciate it. For seven years, now, our family has returned to Union Lido. I tell my friends I am going camping and they look at me in amazement. They recall my gruesome tales of camping in Britain: squelching around in wellies, shrink-warapped in a cagoule.
The 'entertainment' was endless rounds of I Spy: 'It begins with R and it's drumming on the roof of the tent ...' Union Lido can't take the credit for the weather, but for every other facility it rates 10/10.
Visit any of the 16 shower/loo blocks at any time throughout the day and you're more than likely to trip over a cleaner swooshing a hose pipe into every immacualte inch of the place. That quaint custom so beloved of the Lake District, the crucially-timed early morning lock up and the display of the 'Closed for Cleaning' sign seems never to have caught on here. No fights over keeping the kids clean, either, as there are suites of kid-sized facilities with showers, baby baths, loos, basins and ... wait for it ... even hairdryers. There are two supermarkets all stocking delicious food at very reasonable prices, greengrocers bursting with fab fruit and veg, a thrice-weekly fresh fish stall and if you don't feel like cooking, seven excellent restaurants, take-away stalls (don't miss the spit-roasted chicken) and a woodland barbecue site fitted out with benches, tables and a handy bar. This is truly a holiday site which puts families first. Cars are only allowed to travel during very short periods of the day and only then for getting on and off the site. Come 11pm and security staff patrol both the beach and the site - guiding youngsters back to their tents. A free environmentally friendly eco bus (think 'stretched golf buggy') is on hand to take the strain off weary legs. A professionally-staffed drop-in medical centre (complete with ambulance) is a reassuring presence. In the evening, the choice is yours: simply relax by your tent or caravan with a bottle of wine, share a barbecue with friends, take the kids to Bouncy World - which has more bouncy castles than any child, no matter how good they have been, deserves - (don't worry, it's right at the bottom of the site), or opt for a sophisticated soiree in the main square lingering over a romantic meal.
Buon appetito!
How to book: We have always used Bolero Holidays. This is a family firm and we have always been given personal attention. Their service is unfailingly first rate and their prices are very fair. They offer a choice of well-equipped tents, caravans and air-conditioned mobile homes. In addition, you can choose to use their coach service which again is excellent (especially if you are a cyclist as they have a custom-made trailer for transporting your bike), or you can organise your own flight and take a taxi from the airport. Bolero are very helpful about advising your choice of travel.
Alternatively, you can take your own tent or caravan and book direct with Union Lido.
Other major operators such as Eurosites, Eurocamp and Haven also offer accommodation.
